New Owner 50 amp question.

There are some answers that are really discussions on 50 amp service and go into to much theory.

Simple answer please

Is a 50 amp 2007 Montana 220 volts? YES OR NO.

You must be a lawyer you want a simple answer but have rules for the answer.

Please someone who knows more correct me.
But as I understand it RV 50 amp is two legs of 120 volts. Not to be confused with a typically 220 line like for your dryer or stove.

The ac female plug on the wall has 4 terminals. 1 is 110. another is 110. Which is 220 v.
The other 2 are ground and neutral.

That really is like a dryer I believe but does this sound correct?

You have two legs (wires) of 120 volts. And they are kept separate, unlike your house where they can be put together to make 220v with the correct double pole breaker. Nothing in or on your RV is 220 volts.

No and yes.

Nothing in the trailer is set up for 220V from the factory. That's not to say you couldn't add a tandem breaker and pull 220V on each leg of a real 4-wire 50A cord. If you use a 30A to 50A "dog bone" that shares the single leg of the 30A to each leg of the 50A on the same phase, what ever you wired to be 220V won't work as there's no potential difference on the two hots.

And reading your post a second time, I got thinking. If you are referencing the cord and maybe adapting your residence to plug in while at home,PLEASE, study on that really careful. Hundreds of owners fry everything inside their RV when doing this incorrectly. It’s a simple mistake. I recommend a licensed electrician, they have insurance for this.

OK. sO i AM GOING DOWN STAIRS AND WIRE 2 110 WIRES ON THE 4 PRONG JACK AND EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE?

OR IS 1 110 WIRE AND CONNECT IT TO A 50 AMP PLUG OK IF NOTHING IS 110 IN THE TRAILER. i AM WANTING TO PUT IN A 2ND AC UNIT AND I WAS TOLD THAT YOU WOULD NEED 50 AMP FOR THAT ESPECIALLY IF YOU RUN A MICROWAVE AND A HAIRDRYER.

DOES IT MATTER EITHER WAY IS OK AS LONG AS IT HAS A 50 AMP BREAKER IN THE BASEMENT OF THE HOUSE?

If you continue with this you will have a very short Life expectancy. Get a license electrician to do this for you.

To wire your house correctly for a NEMA 14-50 receptacle, you need a 2-pole 50A breaker. That will automatically put each hot wire on separate phases. I wouldn't f around with it if you don't understand electricity.

I'm thinking that if you aren't sure...don't do it. It's too risky and potentially expensive. Be safe and hire a licenced electrician.

I have even wired rental houses so I can do it. Just don't know why the plug on the wall is wired for 220 but the trailer is 110.

The question was based on the trailer I just need to make sure it is supposed to get 220.
Apparently it is.
I will get it done

Houses are exactly the same, you have Two 120 lines coming into your house, L1 and L2. All your normal lights and outlets are connected to either L1 or L2, but if you have an Electric Range or Electric Dryer, they are connected across L1 and L2 via a Double pole breaker to give them 240 Volts. A 50 amp RV is just the same, except that normally there isn't anything that needs 240, so all the outlets, appliances, etc are connect to either L1 or L2 because they only need 120 volts, but you do have a total capacity of 100 amps (50 amps on each leg).

It's not so much that it is wired for 220 but that it has 2 110. The wiring in the RV keeps the two separate and will not make 220. One leg powers one side of the fuse box and the other leg powers the other side. If you use only one 110 line then you will only power half of the trailer.

Except in your RV there is no 220V load. Unlike the dryer motor in your house. Production RV's generally use a split bus panel. Each side of the panel only has access to a single leg of the 120V supply. Both legs however use the supply neutral for all loads. That is as simple as I can make based upon what I am reading in subsequent threads.

Russ, if you hook or wire the panel wrong you will send 220 to your rig and you will blow and burn up every electronic circuit, all electronic equipment and appliance in the unit and could possibly catch your new unit on fire and the insurance company and Keystone will do nothing for you because you think you know what you are doing. Please don't gamble and get a licensed electrician that knows how to wire circuits for an RV.

There is nothing special about it. It is essentially the same as your house. There is 240 vac coming in on two separate 120 vac split phase lines. Read the info on the link below.

http://www.myrv.us/electric/

Everything in your rig uses 120 vac. But some people have added a 240 vac clothes dryer.
