Electrical Problem

Just came back from a ACOE park in Tn and had an experience that I think was a result of their problem with the electrical supply but would like feed back if someone has a different opinion. Whwn connected to 50amp, wife was standind barefoot outside and when touching door frame got a slight shock. Polarity was ok and we made sure all electrial connections in my panel were tight. Also checked tightness of female end of power cord. Connected to 30amp supply and problem went away. An electrican friend will trouble shoot later. Any suggestions??

Wow, are you sure it wasn't just a static 'zap'? I am trying to think if the door frame is connected to the frame of the trailer, I don't think it is. But, on reflection, if you got a shock, the door frame had to be grounded to something... It's interesting the problem went away on 30 amps, one would lean toward a bad ground on the 50 amp cord, but I wouldn't think so.
The electrician is a super idea, he will have meters and will run down the problem. He will ohm the ground on each end of the 50 amp cord. Good luck.

Many years ago I was visiting relatives and was plugged into a receptacle that came from a shop in the back yard. I would get the same tingle when I touched the trailer frame. Come to find out there was a faulty ground on the receptacle.

winter texan,

We had the same thing happen to us. It turned out to be a missing ground on the extension cord. Replaced the plug and that fixed it.

Wayne,

I'll be glad to send you the end of the extension cord that I changed out. That way we wouldn't have to waste all that fuel to tow the rig.

Dennis,
That could work!

Any charges involved? (Pun intended)

Wayne,

I'm POSITIVE you'll get a real jolt out of this good deal. That is until Earlene learns of your plan and then you'll get a very NEGATIVE experience. There will be nothing NEUTRAL about what happens to you then!

Ozz, I suggested a static shock to Laura and I don't think the Web Master would let her reply to be posted. At this point I may not try to determine the problem but offer my Montana to the highest bidder on this site. Kidding, we plan to check it out next week when I take it out of storage before we take another trip. Will let you know what we find.

Ha!, I guess a guy could pencil in a pretty good shock then.
I'm glad she wasn't hurt, working with electrical jobs, I know how much it hurts. I shudder when I think of my last close call.
Good luck on it, sometimes the problem can be tricky to solve.
Stay safe out there.

All kidding aside, electricity is nothing to mess around with. There is a problem and it needs to be addressed. I'm really interested in hearing if you find what the cause is(was).

Thanks,

Latest update. Got the Monty out of storage and check everything with a meter. Found the ground wire on the 50amp cord (female end) that the ground insulation wire was not trimmed long enough and was not making a perfect connection. Going on a trip in a couple days and will have the wife touch the door again barefotted to know for sure the problem is corrected.

Best to use a meter to check the power. Just stick the ground (black) lead in the ground and the hot (red) to the unit.
Set the meter on 50 volts and wet the ground where you stick the probe.
Otherwise buy more insurance on the wife.

Better set the meter on something higher than 50 volts otherwise you'll peg the meter.

Came off the road today and with getting the ground on the cord making good contact, the problem is solved.
