MOC member Alex at the 3G Store (3Gstore.com) once mentioned a model that Verizon carry that does have an antenna jack, although they may not have it in stores, or it too may have been discontinued. One alternative is to buy a repeater that does have an antenna jack, you then have your own little portable "cell" wherever you go. I thought Alex might join in on this thread, but since he hasn't, try an email to him, Alex@3Gstore.com .
On edit, I see Alex did post, and the list he provides does give a link that shows models with antenna ports. So, now the trick is to find one of those models.

trusting what verizon wireless employees say, will work against you in this situation. they are not likely answering based on experience. they are not likely to have looked at each phone themselves and even if they were, they aren't likely to know the difference between an rf/antenna jack and a headphone jack.
our staff routinely inspects each verizon and sprint phone, looking for the elusive jacks. our findings are posted at http://bit.ly/tetherable
the verizon wireless motorola w755 has a round rubber plug on its backside that covers/conceals an rf/antenna jack. its the phone i recommend for anyone looking for an easily-accessible rf/antenna jack.

We've used Cingular/AT&T all over the country without problem. Our aircard is Verizon and it's worked well, also. There are a few places nobody has coverage. In one or two areas over more than six years we've found that one company has coverage and the other doesn't. Sometimes it's Verizon. Sometimes Cingular. Take your pick. They both seem to do pretty well from what we've seen on our phones and the phones of others.

We have had Verizon Wireless phones for the past nine years. Our stick house isn't even wired for a land line. There coverage although far from perfect is getting better each year. If you know where you are headed and are near a Verizon store they can plug a zip code or location into their computer and give you an idea of the coverage in that area. We just this week signed up for Verizon internet service and bought an air card. We live in an area near the end of their broadband coverage and while slow, it does work faster than most dial ups that I have seem.

Alex, I did get the W755 and like it. The salesman was trying to get me to buy a LG Chocolate, the same guy that sold me an LG 2 years ago that got so hot you couldn't keep it in your pocket and after replacement wouldn't keep a charge for 2 days in standby. Better spifs on LGs I guess.
Love motorola flip phones.

I would suggest you look at the coverage map for the areas you are going to spend most of your time.
Here is a Cell Phone Coverage Map.
This includes AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobie and Verizon.
