fuel filters
Just wondering how hard it is to change your own fuel filter. Looks prety easy on my Duramax, but I don't know. I guess I'm still a little afraid of doing something wrong on these diesels. Gas doesn't bother me at all, just not real knowledgeable on diesels.
Is it hard to reprime the filter or do you just pour some into and screw it on, or do you have to pump it to bring the fuel level up.

Rick its an easy job. If you want to make even easier remove the wheel well liner and the filter is right there!
Loosen the bleeder screw remove the wire to the water senser then with a filter wrench it will spin off.
There are two new O rings to be put on the new filter install them. (mike sure the old one can off with the old filter, the smaller one likes two stay on the head). Take the water senser off the old filter and put it on the new one.
Now install the new filter and don't over tighten, the fuel is not under pressure when the engine is running.
Put the water sensor wires back together.
Now pump the filter full of fuel till it comes out the bleeder then tight it back.
Done
The only time I had a problem was I left the smaller O ring in and it made it hard to put the filter on. With 25000 miles and three filters its a snap. Keep your receipts to show you have bought new filters.SeeYa

Rick you need to go to a truck dealership like a Kenworth or something along those lines. 58.00 for a filter for the Cummins is way out of line. I pay 20.00 for mine and I buy it thru Amsoil. I may check them for your year of truck and see what they are. I don't know if yours is the same as mine as I have a 2003. Rick if you can find an Amsoil Dealer in your area or a Wix filter outlet they are 30.00. Just checked Al

Have my done with my oil changes when I swing thru Brookshire TX by B-Line Lube (note: I will go way out of the way to swing by there). The oil change and fuel filter is $63.00. The fuel filter is 8.76 installed. Have it done ever other oil change.
B-Line has several locations across Texas and they only service Diesel engines and cater to 18 wheelers.

I just checked the fuel filter cost at NAPA on-line for my 5.9 Dodge Diesel and it's only $18.19, #3585. I will only use OEM or NAPA parts on my truck, and yes I used to work at a NAPA parts store and feel that they have a very good reputation.

Just changed my fuel filter today, Its very simple and with the correct tool its really no problem. I don't have the correct tool but I will next time. You really need the small spanner type wrench to remove the water seperator on the bottom of the filter. Also be sure and change the upper and lower gaskets. The top one will normaly stay when you remove the filter, be sure and remove it. Open the bleeder valve on top of the housing and pump it up util fuel comes out then secure the bleeder screw, don't strip it out its plastic. Fire it up... Your on you way...GBY..
It cost me a $100.00 to get the filter change at Chevy Dealer in Mission Tx. Never again, I didn't ask what it cost. My mistake....

Check out this site! http://www.fleetfilter.com/application.html
I buy most of my filters (Baldwin) from the Freightliner dealer in town and they are a little cheaper considering sales tax vs shipping.

Thanks

Just remembered something about the bleeder screw. With the last change the O ring on the screw broke and I went to the GM stealer to get one. Gm wanted $18.00 for the O ring because it comes with the bleeder screw. Needless to say I left without ether one, I made a gasket out of some rubber left over from another gasket.SeeYa

I stopped by the Dodge dealership today to inquire about the cost of an oil change on my truck. $75.00!!! You have GOT to be out of your freakin' mind bubba!! I stopped by to see my mechanic, and he said if I buy the diesel oil and filter for it, he'll do it for $15.00-20.00. I think he just feels sorry for me because before I got my truck, I was stuck in a 1995 Taurus, and he all but rebuilt that puppy. I think he's gonna be able to put one of his kids through college with what he got out of me...LOL Isn't the dealership charge a tad on the high side....well actually, isn't it REALLY on the high side???

I have a question...what oil do y'all use in your diesel truck? I've heard a lot about Mobil 1, and synthetic oil. I don't think I want to go with the synthetic at this time. I checked the owners manual, and it doesn't say any specific brand. Thoughts and opinions?...
