The dexter website is www.dexteraxle.com. The lube chart link is
http://i.b5z.net/i/u/1080235/f/Bearing_Lubrication.pdf

There is a lot of good information at this site, especially if you are into designing a super-duper trailer to haul a magnificent HD motorcycle.

Cat320,

Although I perhaps did not well translate it, I think I was also told pretty much the same as you. I then asked about the annual recommendation to replace seals, to which the rep said that doing so would require that the bearings also be removed annually, and that it then made sense to also repack them at that time - similar to what is recommended for the non EZ lube bearings.

All this seems somewhat confusing to me. It seems that if I don't have EZ lube bearings, I need to repack annually and replace the seals. If I have EZ lube bearings, I don't need to repack annually, but I'm supposed to replace the seal, so I might as well repack the bearings at that time.

My head is starting to hurt. A drink of something good might help make this more clear to me.

Don't use more than 2 pumps per year. We travel full time and when I had the self greasers, I felt that if 2 pumps was good, then 3 or 4 must be better. It pushed the seals out, got grease all over the brake linings and the drums. My advice: Be careful. When I changed to 7,000 lb axles with Mor-Ryde, Dexter didn't recommend the self greasers for the very reason I've outlined. I now have the wheel bearings professionaly repacked once a year.

sreigle...they may not be buddy bearings, but they are "designed to allow immersion in water"...that's what the Dexter manual says, FWIW.

rickfox...wrote..."All this seems somewhat confusing to me. It seems that if I don't have EZ lube bearings, I need to repack annually and replace the seals. Agree...they don't make this easy, do they? Some guy who ignores the bearings probably would have less trouble with them than guys like us who try to do what they tell us.

Cat320, so maybe they serve both functions. Interesting.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Just to save wear and tear on my body, I prefer taking the rig into a reputable dealer and have the bearings repacked annually. If we didn't use the rig full time, then I'd consider only having the bearings packed after approximately 12,000 miles. We bought the self greasers originally because I thought they'd save me money. Boy, was I wrong! It cost me $550 dollars to have the wheels all removed, cleaned up, new seals and brake shoes.

We agree with Steve Reigle. Bob pumped according to the manual - until the grease oozes out - and we ended up with grease on our brake linings and thus, no brakes. Had to have new brakes, etc. installed in Wichita about 3 years ago and since then, no problems. Be gentle with your grease gun.
