Mel, the Cobra plan is only for a limited time, anyhow, if I remember correctly. And not very cheap. Your best bet is to get in a large group so you'd get a better rate, whatever insurance company you go with. Escapees might be a good way to go. I have not checked their rates.

Being a Federal Employee with BC/BS we are in pretty good shape anywhere in the country,Medicare is primary and BC/BS ..picks up the rest. Prescription drugs are pretty good also..I think my co pay is 20 or 25.00 for a 90 day supply or more, under that it is 80 them, 20 us..we are very lucky as we are in good health and use no prescription drugs of any kind...yet..

you are right Steve, the Cobra on my group is like $600/mo. I'm of the thought that I could just bank that money and have enough to take care of my medical problems myself. Haven't yet checked the price of the Escapees, but from the first glance, it looked fairly reasonable.

Wow, $600! That's cheap. I just returned form Lansing's Retirement Services office and I got a printout that read over $1,300 for COBRA. I'm trying to qualify to keep full benefits when I retire early (actually, fully retired MI teachers pay $130/mo and the state subidizes the rest).

It would be nice if Ks did that, but they don't... If my mother hadn't gotten disability when she had to 'retire' 8 mos early, the cobra would have eaten her alive... it was going to be over $1000 for her..
it is only $600 (only.. sheesh) because my plan will be employee only at the end of August...

Cobra is for 18 months and the good thing is you can use it with no "previous condition" clauses--gives you time to look for something else that may be cheaper. We are lucky, Paul's school district pays his bc/bs premiums excpet for the $16 dental that all retirees HAVE to get. I can get the same insurance when i quit work for what his cost is--about $320/month. Teachers don't get paid much but at least the Health insurance is good and reasonably priced.
