Flag Pole

Thinking of getting a flag pole for our RV. What type is the best, alumminum or fiberglass? I think I would want the ladder mount. Can the 20 ft pole be raised to any length? What about the light on top. Best brand? Best place to order?

Met a guy at Camping World last summer who had installed a metal one. First time out and lightning struck it and fried all his electronics . As such I have one made out of sleeved PVC mounted to my ladder which works great.

We have a fiberglass flag pole (22 ft) with lights from Flagpole Buddy. The flagpoles come in different lengths.

I have the exact same set up. With the pole mounted to the ladder. it puts the top of the pole around 27 ft.

You will just have to come to quartzite, you will see all kind of flag poles and light at the circle and be able to find any kind you might like in town

I've done a lot of research and think the Flagpole buddy is the best going. They are fiberglass poles, you definitely don't want aluminum. At least with the fiberglass it will blow apart if lighting hits it.(We had a guy out in his boat coming thru the inlet one time, lighting hit his radio antenna and the fiberglass blew apart. His face and neck looked like a porcupine). Flagpole Buddy has the new black colored holders that are suppose to be a lot better.

For what it's worth, we got the 20 foot collapsible aluminum pole from Harbor Freight. Used a coupon and got it for under $40. Can replace it three times over for what CW wants for theirs. It works fine. I made a steel base for it to sit in, and secure it to the hitch in the front. Main reason, that is usually the "road" side, so everyone will see it. Have had no problems as yet. Agree about the lightning concerns. Up here in the NW we don't get much, but still keep my eye out. I have a plastic insulator between the hitch and the pole, and the steel base is firmly on the ground with the pole attached to it, so it's well grounded. Not perfect, but better than nothing. Proud to fly the "colors" and my Navy flag underneath. The HF pole has fittings to fly two flags.

Well grounded? No. I have a ham antenna that has an eight foot long ground rod for each tower leg. So no only is the tower mounted over 4 feet in the ground, but each of the three legs has its own 8 foot rod driven in the ground. That's well grounded, but even that isn't a guaranty that lightning won't travel elsewhere. While electricity travels the path of least resistance, high voltage/amperage electricity goes where ever it wants to!
