brake adjustment

I have read that the old method of increase truck adjustment until brakes skid on pavement does not work since the trailers are too heavy these days. So how do I know if I have the truck controller adjusted right? I don't want to find out the hard way when I can't do an emergency stop.

The brakes on the trailer are designed to stop the trailer regardless of how heavy it is. If you can get the brakes to lock up on the trailer than you may have the gain just a little high. I go about 25 and using the little handle on the controller to see if the trailer will stop both truck and trailer than I know I am in the ballpark. In my 15 F250 the harder I push on the brake peddle the more trailer brakes are applied. So if you dont push that hard on the brake peddle you may not even feel the brakes on your trailer.
