CB radios

How many use CB radio while traveling?
I remember in the 70's and early 80's it seemed everyone had a CB.
I have my radio but haven't installed it in my new TV yet. Don't know how much and how good the traffic is anymore.

We used to use channel 19 for most over-the-road traffic. What channels are mostly used now?

Any advice from the forums?

We have one and used it twice this week, but normally it is not on. We came to a stop twice on interstate this week and was able to use the CB to find out what was going on and options to get around it. The language on ch.19 gets pretty rough so we don't travel with it on.

I have my cb on anytime I am in the truck. I run channels 19 and 13. Will have it on next week enroute to the rally.

I use mine for traffic and to search for cheap fuel. I do not like the language some of the truck drivers use. I feel they use some of that language for a lack of education.

I use mine anytime I'm travelling on the interstate. Keep it usually on 19 and sometimes I check the NOAA stations. I don't mine the language or some of the off-the-wall comments....it keeps me awake and amused when I get tired of listening to CDs or the Radio

We had a CB some 30 years ago when you had to have a license and a call signed to be legal. Then the CB boom hit in the late 70's and it actually killed any realy practicle use other than idle chatter. I will admit that I have entertained the idea of getting another one just for some of the reasons you guys have said above. What is a good brand to use these days? Are you restricted to just 19 channels or is the side-band radios still in existance? Thanks for any input.

I have one in my truck, Cobra, 40 channel, hidden interface, all in the hand tpe. Works really well!
We usually use it when traveling with friends, or sometimes on the interstates, don't like the truckers and their foul mouths too much though.

We use ours like many others do along the interstates to listen for trouble ahead and when we need fuel we may ask where the cheapest areas are. But we also use it when we camp with friends as we often travel together and if someone needs to stop it is quicker than calling everyone on cell phones.

I have one in the truck. Its the cheapest on that I could find as I only use it to find out what the problem in traffic is. Like the others, we find the language abusive to the ears!

I use mine when I need traffic info. When I see another RV I turn it on and maybe give em a holler. I also find it hard to listen to all that nonsense on 19. (13) RV channel did,nt know that.

The RV channel is a moving target..some say 13 others 14.we never hear much on either of them.Having used a CB for many years we find the talk less offensive now than some years ago.I would go as far as to say the foul language is now in the minority now and we hear truckers shaking their finger at those who use foul language.. CB is a useful tool and as with any tool use it when you need it. We monitor 19....

Native Tex -
Boy does that bring back memories! I still have my 1971 license #KPE-1865 and you were supposed to call out the number each time you closed a communication. Mine were self built Heathkit units that only had 23 channels and each channel used a transmit and receive crystal you had to purchase.

Sounds like the only thing that hasn't improved is the language!

Brad - I still have my old CB license in a frame ..# KSO-8432. I was all over the world shooting skip with about a 1000 Watt amp, all the good stuf at that point in time of history. I even still have my of "Chicken Choker" mic the infamous D-104. I used Courier and Browning Golden Eagles. I remember the first Cobra mobile....most of us used Courier mobiles. It was a lot of fun back then.

My CB is also on all of the time (Ch 19) but I use an earphone so DW doesn't have to listen. Useful re. roads, fuel, and directions. Found that in Canadian Maritimes trucks use Ch. 1, and in western Canada they don't use CBs...VHF now!

I was KLI 4669. I find on the west coast that 17 is the channel for n/s and 19 for e/w. I am going to have to get a set of headphones..the CB drives my wife nuts.
