Storage tubes II - Montana Owners Club

Today, I finished the shop work on my Two storage tubes, the 4" for the sewer hose and connection fitting and the big 6" for my new 7' folding dual side step ladder.
My plumbing supply house was out of the thinner walled pipe, had to go with the thicker, I think schedule 40, more expensive, but I have it now.
I made a locking system for the ladder tube, drilled a hole through both the pipe and cap, welded a washer onto a steel tube, flattened the end and drilled a hole for my combination lock. I had to sand down the end of the 6" so the cap would come off easily. I screwed a handle onto it for ease of removal. I have the bent u-shaped 3/8" all-thread for mounting onto the front as Richfaa suggested, good call Rich.
I'll post Three pictures of the jobs I have still in the shop.
May install tomorrow or the next day.

Nice job (again) Ozz, but I have a question. I thought several others had posted they were unable to get a sewer hose with connections into a 4" tube. What is your secret?

Ozz,
It seems a must these days with the larger trailers, and the need for more junk like extra sewer hoses...etc.
I couldn't find any 6" at the time, we were out camping, and the largest home depot had was 4".
One being 6" would have been better.

Hi Carl,
The 4" will take the hose fine, it's the end connector, but it fits inside the glue on screw cap assembly just fine.
On my old TT, I had a smaller version, (shorter) I like this one, as it will carry longer length's. The 90 degree ell won't fit, it will go in the rear compartment.

John, yes the outside storage is great, I like your install job, looks neat. I had to go to a Wholesale plumbing supply house to get the 6" size. I needed it for the big aluminum fold up ladder.

Our sewer hoses have connectors attached (hose came that way) at both ends (one of each) so they are not going to fit in the 4" - right?

Ozz, what plumbing supply house did you use?

I like the thicker walled pipe. I may get the same thing. I have the same sewer connectors you do and am putting the male on one end and the female on the other. The female end fits in the 4 incher, like yours does. But I cannot get the male connector into the 4 inch tube. Do you have the male on the other end of that hose in the picture? That's why I want to go to the larger tube on the next Montana.

I'd be interested in how well you think the large pipe and its mounting will stand up to the heavy ladder. I have the same ladder. Also, I'd be interested in hearing your mounting methods. I saw how
Glen (jrgwdenner) mounted his and read how Rich will mount his.

Maybe one of these days we'll just drive across town to meet you two and see all these changes firsthand.

Thanks Ozz! If you only carry one sewer hose, I can see how the 4" tube wll work. Currently, I have two (and maybe a third soon) complete hose assemblies on board. I would like to store all of them in one tube.

Sue, the 90 degree ell, I just take off and store somewhere else, it just screws on, no problem with that. Just get one that will work, it's worth the trade off.
Carl and Susan, it is nice to have them all in one place, I'll try and post a picture of the retrieval device I made, it's a long flat metal that has an angle iron welded to the end with a finger hold on the outside end. This allows me to pull the entire different lengths out without a problem.
Steve, I used Reeves Wideman, I think they have a store out your way, or someone has, I'm sure. The thick wall will be great for the heavy ladder. I am using all-thread; 3/8", as I wouldn't trust the strap iron, or the screws that attach it, for the heavy pipe and heavy ladder, I use heat treated self tappers with around 32 threads per inch, but to hold, you must have around 4 threads in the steel. I will through bolt the all-thread with lock washers, won't go anywhere.
The elbow detaches and I put it on each time, it's no problem.
I would be glad to show you the Montana, give me a week or so, it's all apart in a heap! I picked up a roll of that Pink no itch insulation for the sides underneath, that is not insulated at all.
Sue and I will tackle that this coming week, and put the Black plastic back on.
I have a duct work job to do at The Corner Cafe, and a 15 Ton unit to install on a 3 story building on Walnut,- downtown, next week, so I will be busy.
Love to have you guys over, maybe we can bring John in from Topeka as well.

Ozz, that will work for us. Thanks. How about we make it in October after we return from the rally. Like you, I'm going to be very busy getting ours the way we want it, starting late next Tuesday. Then the rally.

Hi Ozz,

I plumbed in a quick connect in the propane system for the BBQ, Firepit.. etc.. It beats lifting
the 20lb tank in and out of the storage area. One came with our last trailer, ( 2005 Wilderness advantage ).
It worked so well on that trailer it was one of the first changes I made to this one.

Ozz,

I ran it after the Regulator, I then took the regulator off of the BBQ & Firepit and run a 15' hose from the quick connect right to those units. I now run them off of the regulator in the trailer. I had a few RV dealers tell me that it would not work or you need a special BBQ,..etc. but I've had some great steaks & roasts that tell me different. if any thing I would say the BBQ ( 2 burner Broilking ) might be a little hotter... so I just turn it down a little more.
I've been told you can't have 2 regulators.. I don't know why.. If they were both the same pressure or the first one in line was a higher pressure I can't see why it would not work. But works great the way I have it so I'll leave it alone.

While we're still on the subject of storage tubes...

Does anybody have a picture of a square fence post tube mounted on their Monty? We were walking through Home Depot the other night and I saw one that is 4" square by 100" long. I was debating whether to mount it across the front behind the landing gear or parallel to the waste pipe under the frame rail. I figure the 4" square is the same size as most RV bumpers so the end connectors should fit ok. Any thoughts?

Good work. On the regulators, I would guess that the second one on line would have to have a larger differential pressure on the top of the diaphragm in order to accurately put out the desired pressure. Flexing of the rubber, and all.

I think Parrothead did that, not sure. I don't know why it wouldn't work. Being a Pipefitter, I just gravitate to the pipe....

We haven't put the square fence post in yet. We will use it for the fold up ladder and plan on mounting to the roof of the basement. I think it might get banged up if underneath the Monty. This is one of our projects that will probably wait until the first of the year. It is too hot here now to work outside for long and we have homes to sale, stuff to get rid of, etc.

Now, this tube installation is one project that I am looking forward to. I have not looked underneath my rig yet to determine where is the best place or even how to do it. I will get the predrilled pipe to ensure ventilation/drainage, however, I am not quite sure how to install. I am thinking that maybe the best place would be right behind the front jacks. What say you?

Mike,
That is where I will install mine. Otherwise, you would have problems attaching underneath. The frame width would be too far apart, you would need a center support. Besides, without taking the plastic off and looking where you drill, or screw into, you may hit an electrical line, they lay right on the beams in many places.

I drilled up through those predrilled holes in the pipe and into the frame. I was able to drill four mounting positions. If I recall, I put it under a cross member. They work well for the sewer hoses but for that heavy ladder I'll use the square fence post in the basement storage area, like Parrothead plans to do.

A third one I installed is forward of the other two (one is original equipment on this Montana). I mounted it to the floor of the front locker with bolts and lockwashers. Since the sewer hose is light it does not seem to flex the locker floor.
