50 AMP Surge Guard

Just ordered 50 AMP Surge Guard from CW, come with free locking device. Only got locking device because it was free. My power cord is the type, that screws on to 5er. So im thinking, if someone really want to steal surge guard, and its lock to cord ther are going disconnet cord from 5er stealing both.

Has anyone ever had one grow legs and walk away ?

BTW not very cheap.

My surge guard has a chain, clamp and padlock from Lowes that secures it to the pedestal. It's not burglar proof but will give me enough time to see if the villians are bullet proof.

LOL, good ideal chaining to pedestal.

Haven't know of any being stolen, but I grew up on the south side of Chicago and was in law enforcement for 20 years or so and so I lock mine to the pedestal. What really worries me is someone stealing the anaconda. That would be a problem to replace instantly in heat like this.

Likwise, I use a chain and padlock - still can be stolen with some difficulty, but at least its one less thing to worry about! But, after going through a campground's electrical surge in Oregon without a surge guard which took out my microwave, tv receiver box, and two lamps - I never leave home without it now!

Same here, plus I cover the pedestal with an old tire cover. If questioned I say it's to keep the rain off the cord receptacle.

I have only read of a couple of instances of a surge guard being stolen, but that's it. I hear far more stories they have NOT been stolen. Portable generators are another story. So camp next to someone with a generator - no, I don't really mean that.

Mine is inside my rig, but I've seen many, many others at a campground not having a problem being outside the rig. I would be more concerned if it was a power management system that monitors electricity so that it not only protects against surges, but against lower power. I have heard these are more popular to steal because they do much more and are more expensive. But I've seen many of these just sitting outside their rigs, too. I guess it might matter where you are camped and what the surrounding neighborhoods might be like. I've always wondered it it was a desperate campground employee, but whatcha gonna do.

I got the permanent mount model from Progressive Industries. Mounted out of sight and put the monitor inside a cabinet. Would take some doing to find/remove it.

I have the 50 amp Surge Guard. I have found that campgrounds, if 50 amp, usually have a newer pedestal box. This box can be closed and locked with a pad lock so that is what I do - plug in the Surge Guard and lock the box.

I have locked my Surge Guard to the 50A cable. No problems in the past 6 years of travels. I can't remember seeing many others on pedestals in RV parks--maybe they are there and basically fit in to the area. Anyway, no problems with ours--I still have the same one I bought!

I've been using both the 30- and 50-amp surgeguards for over 10 years and still have the original ones. Keep them locked to the cable and to one of the slideout rails when possible. I usually find some way to cable lock the surgeguards for protection.

I have the Progressive 50 amp EMS and have not locked it at all. Locks only keep honest people honest.

I can say that this unit has protected us once so far from a high voltage situation. The unit shut off the power to our rig until the voltage returned to a safe level. High voltage can be just as damaging as low voltage. I like the complete EMS instead of just the surge protector.

We had both the EMS Protector and and Hughes Autoformer and the only thing I locked to the pedestal was the autoformer. In my 4 years of fulltiming, which included many hours sightseeing away from the park I was in, we never had any problems with thievery.

That's why I have the hard wired unit. I just plug in my RV, check the monitor and open a cold one. E-z peazy. YMMV.
