Route 66 ?

Folks when we leave las vegas we are heading to williams Az. When I get to kingman I want to take old RT66 for I believe about 95 miles then back on I-40 to williams. I know someone has driven it and I love to drive on it I just want a nice easy ride through the country side. is there a problem going through the old road with the montana.

Bobby,
I used to drive that road all the time. But that was a long time ago. It is still a fairly well traveled road. You should have no trouble traveling with your Monty except for some potholes. Definitely worth taking.

We took the old mountain route from the river over to the Kingman area. There were a couple of really rough places where the water has washed out parts of the road but it was still easily passable. I don't think I'd pull the Monty on this particular section. There was NO traffic.

The other section of 66 that we have driven with the Monty was from Ludlow to Amboy and then on to connect with 40 near Goff and Essex. The road was rather rough with little to no road maintenance. Of course this section is West of where you'll be going. Again with no traffic. I actually was able to remember back to when I was just a kid when we drove from Texas to look for a job in CA. I remembered snippets from the river up and over the mountain toward Goff and Amboy. Funny that I would remember this since we covered those sections at night because it was so much cooler! Go for it Bobby. Dennis

On Edit: Bobby be sure and stop at the Peach Springs area.... There should still be some activities going on there. And if you want to visit the newest "wonder" of the Grand Canyon I believe somewhere out near this area is the road out to the Indian built Glass Viewing thing that sticks out over the edge of the Grand Canyon. Fairly expensive but I guess also exciting. DH

We used to drive Rte 66 back and forth across country...but as HamRad says, that was a long time ago and we were not towing. Can't help with your request, but ask for an update if you make the trip.

Haven't been on that road for 5 or 6 years but back then except for being narrow and with a few hair pins and potholes it was ok.

Bobby we just left Vegas yesterday (tues) but didn't go route 66. Sounds like a nice slow and easy drive. We just went south and got on I-40 and are now in Williams AZ staying at Canyon Gateway RV Park. Not a bad park and its a Passport America Park with a rate of $24 a day regularly $40 a day. This rate is supposedly with a 48 hr prior reservation. They gave the PA rate to us after calling just 20 miles away. Just an average park but within a good driving distance to the Grand Canyon.

Have fun on your trip, and hopefully you will be leaving Vegas better than we did. We left some cash there for sure............lol

Bobby,
I'm not referring to anything up toward Vegas / Hoover Dam. As far as I know 66 never extended that direction. We, however, often travel that direction. At least as far as Golden Valley. It's been a few years since we took 93 all the way across the dam.

There are several sections I was referring to: The section you are thinking of is East bound out of Kingman and goes through Hackberry, Truxton, Peach Springs and Seligman and connects with 40 again. This section of 66 is still a fairly busy road. Since the Indian Reservation is out this direction the road is in fairly good condition. And I'm with you regarding walking on GLASS and looking straight down several thousand feet! No thanks! And they also charge an arm and a leg for the privilege!

Then there is a section West bound out of Kingman that will take you to Needles via Oatman. The 66 out of Kingman toward Oatman/Needles is a very lightly traveled road and is fine until you reach the mountains just before Oatman. Then it turns into a very twisty hairpin turn type road and I would not recommend towing your rig on this section. But I'd suggest you take this road just for the adventure.

This next West bound section of road is a real adventure and meanders up the mountains out of Needles and works its way to Goffs. Sort of follows the RR in a very general way. Near Goffs you can either reenter highway 40 or continue on the old section of 66. If you continue west on 66 you will end up at Amboy. From Amboy you can either head south toward Twenty-nine Palms and that area. If you continue on old 66 it will take you to Ludlow where you must reconnect to 40.

These sections of 66 vary from pretty good to watch out for the potholes! But if you are at all interested in History and enjoy a leisurely drive thru some fantastic desert country then you NEED to drive these sections! Take your time on any of these sections of 66 and you will be in for some pleasant surprises. Check out the various eateries located in some of the remaining towns. Enjoy! Dennis

Bobby: As you go East on I 40 get off on old 66 as it goes thru most on the towns along the way. Don't forget to stand on the corner in Winslow, AZ.

Guys we left vegas on 93 to kingman and jumped on old 66 and run it to seligman would have ran the rest but I missed a turn and had to get on I-40. The road is great alot of traffic I gress because it is still in use for the small towns. we stopped at a store in hackberry the only one I saw the cooless place with lots and lots of old 66 stuff including cars with a 57 corvette sitting under the front shed.
BTW Dennis I think you were talking about seligman and not peach springs it is a complete rt66 town I will have to go back there one day this week and walk around. Thanks guys for all the great Info. Only bad thing was I got a ticket in boulder city for improper turning don't know how much yet. vegas is still getting me!!! LOL
