Silverton, Colorado
We are looking to go to Denver this summer to see our sons. We've stayed at Chatfield SP before and that was nice. On the way back we want to stay somewhere near Silverton. Any advice?

To get to Silverton, you need to go over Red Mountain Pass. I'd advise against that, and I live here and drive in the mountains all the time. Ouray is beautiful, and you can make that your base of operations and drive over to Silverton in your TV. There is another pass to the west, Lizard Head, I think, off of the top of my head, that is a lot easier. I'll check back when I can look up the name for you.
If you want to come in the other way, you can go to Durango and over Molas pass to Silverton. Last time I was up there there was construction on top that resulted in pretty slow going. That was last summer, so they may be finished with whatever they're doing by now.
That part of Colorado is some of the prettiest country you'll ever see, but just remember that it's not called high country for nothing, and watch your speed on the downhill grades.

I suggest Durango. It's close enough where you can drive to Silverton and not have to drag the rig over narrow roads. We stayed at Junction Creek National Forest campground that has some nice sites with electric (no reservations allowed). It was terrific. You can also catch the Durango-Silverton railroad to take you to Silverton. It's a steam locomotive and the scenery is stunning.

I elk hunt near there every year, drop dead gorgeous country. Not sure what direction you're coming from, but there's a nice looking cg between Montrose and Ridgeway you might want to consider. I think it's a state one. Don't forget to head up to the mines above Silverton for a looksee !

Traveled this area many times but without RV. I agree with all about camping on either side, Montrose or Durango and doing day trips to Silverton and Ouray. Lunch at either and do a walking tour of each. Hauling the Monty from Durango to Montrose would be high adventure. I cannot recall the height of the snow sheds.

In Silverton, rent a Jeep and drive over the pass to Lake City and back--an all day trip with great views. My wife will not go with me again--so I am looking for passengers next time! Leave the Monty in Durango or north of Silverton.

We took the trip from Durango to Ouray a couple of years ago with our rig, but I don't think I would do it again even though I don't think it was that bad.

One tip, if you decide to take the Durango/Silverton railroad trip (recommended), just take the train one way and take the bus back. Spectacular scenery, but it's the same both ways, and the round trip by rail will eat up a full day.

Agreed. We took the train both ways and were we to do it again would only take the train one way. Well worth the money and don't forget the museum... very good for all ages!

I agree with the take the train up and the bus back to Durango. Also try to get a seat in the last car on the right side. The train stops on a curve with the canyon wall and the river below, makes for a great photo op. Take your coat no matter how warm it is in Durango. Enjoy your trip.
