Roadside Assistance

What does everyone use for Roadside Assistance? We always had AAA but I recently dropped it because I thought I had read here that there is a better provider out there, but now I can't find it.

We use Coachnet. We had AAA before we moved up to the Montana. AAA sales people insisted that with the RV coverage we had everything we needed. Just to be safe I called the emergency number and asked them "If the truck broke down on the interstate would they tow both and they said no, the trailer was too long". That's Kansas AAA some other states the Monty is fine. AAA is like Blue Cross in that each state has it's own. If I have trouble, I don't want hassle so we went with Coachnet. We have used both their road service and their repair referral service and had excellent results both times.

Had coachnet for years with our diesel pusher, never needed the service. Got the monte, needed it for blowout in georgia, took them hour to find our records before they would even send anyone. Gave up and changed it in the rain myself. Needed it again week later in massachusetts, another marathon blowout, they were good, had service there in half hour. But they never paid the $25 bill to mass dot highway service...so we gave up on them and went with good sam. Haven't used it yet. John

We have Coachnet and only used them once and they took care of it for us.

After reading many posts about roadside service on another RV forum I went with Coachnet. There were far more posts about problems about Good Sam than Coachnet. But maybe there are simply that many more Good Sam members, I don't know. But there were also posts about problems with AAA and Coachnet. So something of a cr@p shoot it seems.

Have not used them yet so no personal experience.

Good Sam here. alot cheaper than AAA and they cover my whole family and all our vehicles at no extra charge.

Over the years we have had about all of them. Allstate, coachnet, AAA good Sam's . They are all pretty much the same. Every couple of years we shop around for a good deal and purchases that one. We have Good Sam now.

We have Good Sam- Have had it for more than 20 years- Have used it on more than one occasion over the years- Have always received good service promptly- Have not had to use them in the last 2 plus years [knock on wood]- Will renew again when due- JMHO- Don

Good Sam. We have had it for 14 years. Have used it 4 times and always good service.

Coachnet! Used them several times for flat tires on the rig and truck. A couple of times in Washington state and one time in S. Dakota. Had good service each time. Also called them with a water heater problem which they trouble shooted me through. Yes, they trouble shoot problems with the rig, also. All part of the service. They cover everyone in my family on any family vehicle.

We had AAA with RV coverage. They refused to tow my 2003 F450 when I had a wheel problem. Even though it was insured with AAA they won't tow anything over F350. Therefore I got Good Sam and Fords 5 year towing.

All the road side assistance companies are just go betweens. They all have contracts with local tow service providers. So depending on where you break down is going effect how good or bad the service is. If there are a lot of tow providers in your area it will be quicker. If there is only 1 or 2 it could be a while.

I was with GS and had a blow out(Marathons). They told me the provider would be there in 1 hr. After an 1 1/2 passed I called the provider and he told me it would be 3hrs because he was out on another call. I called GS back and complained. They cancelled the first tow service and contacted another one who was there in 45 mins. When my contract was up with GS I decided to give CoachNet a try just for the heck of it. I haven't used them yet so I'll see.

But after my first experience I decided I'm not going to wait for roadside assistance just for a tire. I installed an ARB twin on board air compressor system in my TV and the tools needed for for a quick road side tire change and then some. Oh yeah I also install G614's on the Monty

Roadside assistance is sort of a crap shoot. When I bought my first truck (2006), I had GM's assist, AAA coverage, and GS Roadside. Had a tire with a big bubble on the side on I80 just outside Rock Springs, Wy on a Sat. late afternoon during a pouring rain. I called all 3 and nobody could get help out within 3 hours. First one said he couldn't do anything on site, and would have to tow us back in to town and wait until Monday for a new tire. Other guy says he had plans or something or other and couldn't come at all Saturday night. Third place said they couldn't come at all.
Luckily I was stopped at a couple of closed gas stations - one of which had been turned into a fireworks store. A nice young guy worked there and had grown up in Prescott and worked in dad's gas station. He helped me get my spare down and change the tire. (I hadn't investigated the spare tire thingy yet and this was my first trip) So I was on my way home to Mesa, AZ with no spare (ulp). Got all new tires when I got home.

I have always carried a DC air compressor, hydraulic jack, torque wrench, and other tools to change my tires on the road--even a mat to lay on. I have used Coachnet and they sent a well equipped truck to my rescue. On another occasion, the tow truck driver had to borrow all my tools, jack, etc. I dropped them. As others have said, you will get a local tow operator--it may be fully equipped to do the job or just a tow truck.

Like TIMANDSUSAN, I carry a 12 volt air compressor, hydraulic jack and an 18 volt impact tool- However, at my age [80 plus], I would only resort to DIY in a dire emergency- JMHO- Don
