Updated/Looking for "Door latch modification"

I tried searching to no avail. I’m looking for information on a modification I once seen for the screen door, where someone put in a simple latch lever to open the door without having to open the sliding door cover.
Anyone know where I can find that?

Bill and Donna-- Check out the new Camping World's catalog! Go to page 37 and look at figure and picture L. Is that what you are looking for? I saw this at one of last year's rallies and picked one up on the next trip to CW along with the Screen Door Push Handle, and the Screen door Grill. Totaled less than $50 but now I won't have to slide the door slide over to open the door and I don't have to worry about putting my foot through the bottom screen. The push handle works great for closing the door, too, you don't have to slide the slide again to grab the handle and close it. All I need now is the Screen Door Closer. I think I can even invent that with a couple of springs from the hardware store!

There were a couple on the home page under show and tell but they were Geocities based which has went kaput. I am sure some MOCers will provide pics, but the simplest one that I have seen is as follows. It consisted of a bicycle spoke (or similar stiff wire) and a couple of drilled holes. The holes were drilled in the upper ledge above the screen door slide and in the end of the black plastic door handle itself. The spoke went throught the hole in the door down to the handle and then was bent through the hole drilled in the handle. I have seen knobs glued to the top of the spoke for a decorative touch. To open the door from the inside all you have to do is press down on the spoke knob. Takes about two minutes to install once you have the drill bit! Hope this helps, and hopefully someone will post a pic! Did you get the screen door plasticized??

I'm with Rondo on this one! I've been using this devise for over a year, you can't beat it for 4.99 and it works great.

I'm almost ashamed to tell what I did, but, it cost me nothing. I used a hanging basket hanger. I cut one arm off it at the hook and snapped the other end over the handle. drilled a small hole in the slider and it's done. The only thing i need to do is find a white one somewhere. The one I used is green.

Mine is like Dons. I used a bicycle wheel spoke. Worked great

Does anyone think a piece of #10 copper wire would do the trick. I’ve been thinking for a while as to what I could use and then I thought of trying that.

I had the screen door off and did the clear plastic mod on it. I replaced the screen and at the same time I added the clear material like plastic (from Wal-Mart). I’m very pleased at how well it turned out. If I get a chance tomorrow I’ll try and post a photo or 2. Thanks everyone for the great ideas! It’s the simple things that make things so much better sometimes.

The #10 copper won't be stiff enough. It will bend too easily. I got the screen door latch from CW and it works good.

I used coat hanger, don't think anything that bends easier would work

I used a gold colored coat hanger and a black wire nut for the top of the rod.
Works great, thank to the one who gave me the idea last year.

How does the CW one allow you to get to the door latch and lock if it goes through the plastic slider?

If you're locking the main door,you just slide the plastic slider back. The CW devise is only to open the screen door without having to slided the plastic panel back.

The CW opener just slides to the side along with the plastic panel when you want to use the latch on the outer door. Come on by site #117 and I will demonstrate.

I installed the CW lever last year, ....and I hate it!

As soon as the weather starts getting nice and I have some time, I will be doing the bicycle spoke modification to replace the (crummy IMHO) lever instead.
