Dale, just an FYI, but you can also get DEF at most Pilot/Flying J's in the truck lanes. Have never tried it, but been thinking of saving one of the 2 1/2 Gal containers and refilling as their price was running less the $3.00 per gal last I checked. Making it an even better deal than Wally World.
This is what I do. Carry a 2 1/2 def container and refill it at the pump at Pilot/Flying J. Traveled 8500 miles last summer with SOB in tow and never had a problem. When the truck calls for DEF, I fill the trucks DEF tank with the 2 1/2 DEF container that I filled at Pilot's pump. When I need to fuel, I refill the DEF container. Works great and a good savings. I always have 2 1/2 gallons when traveling. When I store the truck and Monty for the winter the only DEF I have is in the truck's DEF tank. The container that was used in the summer is recycled and I start with a new tank come the new season. (if it ever gets here!)

I normally get about 1000 mi., not towing. We just made a 1385 mile trip and the dash says DEF less than 1/2 full. Since the tank holds 2.5 gallons (supposedly) that would indicate that I've run about 640 mi./gal, towing. The last time I tried adding a 2.5 gal. jug at less than 1/2 reading, it wouldn't all fit. Right now we're 10 mi. west of Dripping Springs, TX. We haven't found any DEF around here yet. I'll try the Tractor Supply Store in Dripping Springs today.

Your Ford has a 5 gallon DEF tank. Once you see the "Less that 1/2" message, you will have no problem adding a 2 1/2 gallon jug of DEF. Most of us do it that way and never run into the uglier messages about fill it now or risk being stopped on the side of the road.

I think all rigs use DEF at different rates depending on how truck is driven and the manufacuturer. I reallynoticed the last part when I went from a Volvo powered big truck to a Cummins powered Kenworth. My KW uses more DEF. I do the same 550 mile run as I did with the Volvo, so I think my data is good.
As for my Duramax, I buy my DEF at the truckstop, filling a dedicated can and top off before starrting any long run towing the Montana.

on my 2014 Ram 3500, I heard a lot of the same crap as the rest of you. However, my DEF tank holds 8 gallons and I have a gauge on the dash. It was full when I picked up the truck and I now have 5300 miles on it. So if it's 1000 miles/gallon why have I added 3 2.5 gallon boxes of DEF??? I've only towed the 5W for 3000 of that total miles. It maybe right but I don't know. Everything works great, but when I had the first service/oil change today, they did update the engine software when included something related to the DEF system.
I have the same truck and have seen about 2500 miles per tank. I only have 7000 miles on my truck and thought maybe it was a breakin thing. I used to be the Service Manager at a Dodge store and even the engineers could not give me a good answer as to what to expect.
I may check with the guys on the update and see what they come up with.
