R V Insurance Premiums Versus Unit Length

Would appreciate some feedback or expertise on Insurance Premiums and the length of your 5th wheel. It seems they calulate the premium on length and I could not get clarification on overall length of unit or the living space length of the unit. Example the 3400RL spec for overall length is 38 feet 4 inches, yet in a lot of advertising people use 37 feet as the number for the same unit.(This calculation can amount up to $100 per year additional for premiums)
What is used and what is correct for calculating insurance premiums?
Thanks for any help/advice on this. Ellis

I hadn't heard that here in the U.S. Maybe someone else is more knowledgeable about it. My sense is that they insured the vehicle based on its value.

Ours, Michigan, based on value as well. But, there are a lot of Canadian friends here on MOC that should be able to help you out.

We bought our Montana in the US and at the time the Canadian dollar was worth more than the American, so when we insured our trailer in Canada, as you say it was by length and not value, and at the time they asked me what the declared value of the trailer was including taxes, which was about 60 thousand, this year before I renewed the insurance, which by the way is total replacement cost insurance, i told the agent things had changed with the dollar and the 2009 price would be substatially different, she phoned the underwritng company and she was advised that we get the 2009 price in Canadian dollars. We did and that MSRP figure was 90 thousand. We now have the declared value of 90 thousand and it didnt change our premium. Go figure, strange as it may seem there you have it.

Caution on the term Total replacement cost value. Check with your company on exactly what that means. It MAY mean replacement value not to exceed the declared or actual cash value. I thought it odd that if the actual cash value of my 06 camper was say 45,000 but todays replacement cost was say 55,000 that the insurance company would pay me the higher value in the event of a total loss.. I asked them why they needed to know what we paid for the camper and to declare a value on it IF they were going to pay replacement cost all they needed to know was that it was Montana 3400. Ask the question..be sure it means what you think it means.. Now you can pay a higher premimun for
"replacement cost"
