Converter Troubleshooting Question

Leaving tomorrow for a couple days "fix the coach" trip. Taking the new dog. Gonna try and get the new decals on the nose. But the subject question: What's the Letterman top 10 list of things to check/causes for the converter not recharging the batteries when plugged into 110, or running the generator, or when hooked to the TV?

Have you checked the fuse by the battery?

Have you checked the battery itself? I would be suspect of the battery if it does not charge on all three.

Have dual batteries actually. New last year. Actually had this problem then too. Old batteries were tested after replacement, and I was informed they were still good when I pulled them out. I'm thinking I have a fuse loose or something on the converter. I have had on again-off again charging problems with this coach since I got it...............loose ground wires on the back of the control panel etc. Just wanted a "top 10 list" to run down again this trip, make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

You listed off 110 and running the generator as well as off the tow vehicle. I divide that into two areas. The wiring from the tow vehicle to the batteries should be direct. I would check the 7 pin plug on the tow vehicle and see if you have 12VDC on pin 4 and ground on pin 1. If you do then check for voltage at the batteries for the black lead (pin 4). If none then check the wiring box under the pin and see if there is a fuse on the black lead (pin 4).

Your 110 and generator both power the converter so I would check for blow fuses on the converter leads to the battery. If your generator has an alternator and will recharge the batteries by itself check for a fuse there.

Best of luck.
Let us know what you find.

Try disconnecting the battery (remove ground lead) and then see if 12 volt lights will work, if they do, then the problem is not the converter itself.

If you have the OEM converter, it is probably an Iota. The one I had had two fuses in the back of it. I think they were 30 amp.

Should you find that the converter has failed, the Intelipower 9280 by Power Dynamics might be worthy of your consideration. It is a step down charger that senses and selects from three different voltage levels.
