Frightened Yorkie

We have a Yorkie that is a rescue dog. She is adjusting real well to a new home with no abuse or yelling and plenty to eat. The one problem is when a storm comes up she is scared to death starts shaking uncontrolable and hasseling. Has any one tryed the body wrap for dogs. Any ideas will be appreciated we feel sorry for her and just want to help. We have a toy poodle we have had for 6 years and he and the Yorkie get along great. Willie the poodle isn't afraid of any thing he is daddys boy and don't want me out of his sight. The Yorkie loves my wife and is a big lap dog, just what she wanted. Thanks for any help George

We had a Yorkie that was afraid of the thunder and would hide and shake. It might just be inherent in that breed.

We get acepromazine from our vet. We give a smaller dose than the vet recommended and it has worked for our 21 lb schnoodle. He still lets us know when a storm is on its way or the 4th of July has arrived. Funny, we have AC-130 gunships firing most nights and it doesn't bother him. Guess he knows it's the sound of freedom.

I have heard that the body wrap you can purchase does work for some yorks.

I have tried swaddling with a bath towel, semi-successful.

You can also try rubbing the dog down with Downy dryer sheets, yes, I am serious. Something about it takes the static in the kids fur and reduces it. The static apparently causes the dog some minor discomfort with little prickles from the storms energy. I have used this method with my Cappy, and it did reduce the trauma and drool!

Also, some kinds of natural drops, Rescue Remedy, I believe was the name, get at natural food stores, etc. I did not have any notable results from this, although others have said it is wonderful.

Good luck, it is hard to deal with.

Our Yorkie is afraid of nothing. We have a friend with an Akita that uses the wrap with some success. I never thought of the dryer sheets, but it makes sense

Our friends have a sweater called a thunder shirt that seems to work.

We have a Yorkie and a Maltease. The Yorkie is fine as long as I am around, but the Maltease is different. When the storm and thunder approaches or firecrackers start going off he heads to the middle of the house and shakes and cries. I pick him up and put him on the sofa beside me. I then cover his ears with my hand and talk to him. Pretty soon he stops shaking and even falls asleep. Give it a try before you give him sedatives.

With our new dog the trash truck is her fear right now, she goes balistic. I have been trying giving her a treat when the trash truck comes rolling up to the house, sorta make a game out of it. it seems to be working but going slow we only get to do it once a week. we did have some thunder a while back but that didnt bother her like the TT did. I dont make a big deal about it to her, I'm trying to make her think its a everyday occurance and no big thing it seems to beworking but slow.

Ah the evil thunder! Many dogs suffer from this type of anxiety and there are many remedies that have been tried. The suggestions given already are good ones and I would certainly try them. I wish there were a guaranteed solution but there just isn't one. One thing helps one dog and is ineffective for another. Just give each method two or three tries and then keep it or eliminate it.

One thing to remember - don't accidentally reward the scared behavior! It is very easy to scoop the dog up and give all sorts of attention and do the "baby talk" routine when the dog acts this way. In dog terms, you are telling him to act this way and you will get all this reinforcement. Try to look for improvements, no matter how small, and give the dog praise in smaller doses. He will learn that those behaviors make you happier and he will want to do them more often.

There is no easy way to success here. I have two dogs who aren't keen on storms and firecrackers. I have been able to improve the situation but it is not totally gone. Good luck with all your efforts. And thank you for giving this dog a forever home!
