How do you avoid low clearance Overpasses

What sources and advise do you have to plan ahead to prevent low clearance issues with your 5er. I do not yet know how tall my unit will be but I ordered the front A/C and I have but may not install the MaxxAir Covers on the two fantastic fans. I suspect I might be 13 or 13.5'

After you install all of your goodies, measure your height. Then, write it down and paste it to the visor of your Tow Vehicle. Then, don't go under anything that is less than 3" higher than your measured height. Why do I say 3"? Well, when the DOT gets done repaving, they often DO NOT remeasure the height of the underpass, and paving can add 1 to 2 inches!

Go to Flying J and purchase a Motor Carriers' Road Atlas. The price on the atlas is not what you will have to pay. It is deeply discounted. In the atlas, by state there is a listing of every low bridge in the state. Within the state, the info is listed by route in numerical order.

When you determine your route, you can look up that route in the low clearance guide section and then you will know. The atlas is a very good atlas used by many truckers and RVers.

I bought the laminated version for about $30.00. The list was nearly $80. The paper version is about $10 with the list being about $20. We use it with a grease pencil to mark our route. The maps also have exits numbered and marked. I learned about it right here on the MOC.

I am sure someone will come along and tell you about a website that has the info, but there is so much more to the atlas than just this info. You can print out a bunch of sheets or have it in a book form.

I have the same as Stiles, and it is well worth the cost of $30.00, has so much info, truckers use it so is good for rv'ers

That works. Not traveling so far and wide yet (still employed) I printed out the relevant states. One set is going in the TV and one in the campground directory.

Clyde- I have restored a bunch of them (7 or 8) and they are all in different states now except for one. Oooops I lied. 2. One is 12 miles from where I live and I just bought a ZTU on a sale about 3 weeks ago and it is in my shop. That makes 2 that are pretty close to home. Oh, I forgot this is not a tractor forum...JB

There is also a software for trip planning that will warn you when you have a low bridge. It is Co-Pilot. I specifically mapped a low overpass and it warned me of it's existence. It was a bridge just west of San Antonio, TX that is only 12 feet or less. I also use the Motor Carriers Road Atlas (paper version) to check my route. We keep it in the cab in case we ver off route a little.
