"Cabin Fever & Sticker Shock"

Cabin fever really set in today. We completed our taxes and went out for dinner. After dinner we stopped in our local Keystone dealer and discovered they are now carrying the Montana line. WOW, What a surprise! We looked at the “Montana 3400” and the “Montana Mountaineer” along with the “Montana High Country.” First time we ever had seen a “High Country.” They were listed for around 60,000. The 3400 didn’t have a sticker but we asked them to look it up and we were told it was listed for around 80,000. Now that brings up a question… Did they tell us wrong on the 3400 or should it actually list that much higher. If it does then what makes it more valuable by 20,000?

We weren’t impressed with the “High Country” at all where they had off white cabinets in part of the kitchen and everything else was a darker colored wood finish. The High Country also had bunks which would be nice if you had several children staying with you.

Bill and Donna,
If you want to compare prices on a 3400RL you might want to check Couch's Campers in Middletown, OH. They are just north of Cincinnati which isn't all that far from you.

I just checked and they have a 3400RL in stock. If you inquire on-line they will give you a price that will probably be very competitive. Their web site is "couchscampers.com". There phone is 513-539-0000. They gave me a price that was enticing enough that I drove from Houston to Middletown in the middle of winter to pick up my Monty.

They were decent enough to do business with. They do allow you to spend several days in your new trailer on site so you can get all of the little problems identified and taken care of.

Thanks for the information; I’ll check out their web site. We were only looking at them. We do not want to trade units or even make a purchase at this time. We were just puzzled as to why there was so much difference between the two units.

Bill me thinks somebody is padding the prices. We were just at an RV show this past weekend and there were some nice 5vrs there - SOB as no Montana's was there but they would have a MSRP price of$45,000 and a show special of $25,000. When you get to looking at the unit, $25,000 would be pushing it for me. So makes you wonder where tha MSRP comes from. But I guess there is the poor soul who see's the MSRP and the salesman gives it away, loses all his commission, just to move the unit for %10 percent off and the couple smiles all the way to the free campground for the weekend.

A fully loaded 3400 should go for no more than $49,000 on a straight buy right now. Camping World usually tries to get closer to $60,000, but volume dealers can beat that to death.

We noticed many campers at the St Louis Camper show had white or beige cabinets with other oak trim in the camper, and just dont' care for it. THe new Montana 3750FL is really neat with the living area up front with opposing sides. As far as pricing it is amaizing to see the price ranges that different dealers are charging. They used to say let your fingers do the walking, now its surf the net!

80K a bit high. Ask then if they have any swamp land in South Florida. 54K is more like it and go down from there.

MSRP = Must Sell to Rich People......No one in their right mind should even think of buying something/anything for MSRP unless you are really trying to spend the kids inheritance. I know you guys know this already, but maybe some, unsuspecting potential Montana owner doesn't!!!!!

Agree - they are about $30,000 off. We saw some places asking in the 60s and 70s when we bought our '09 last year. We got ours for under 49K and the only reason I paid that much is because they offered me well more than I was going to sell my old unit for - sight unseen.

On the High Country I liked the full body paint but not really the interior. There was a Keystone rep there so I asked the question I posed on this forum, "Is the High Country to replace the Mountaineer?" The answer was no. It is intended to appeal to those who want a Montana or Mountaineer but need/want lighter weight. I think he said the model on display at the Houston RV Show is 9400 lbs. I didn't check the sticker but that's likely the unloaded vehicle weight. Still, it's quite a bit lighter than our 3400.

If you can't get minimum 20% off MSRP, find another dealer. The majority will do that without blinking an eye. Some here have reported getting 30% or even a little more. And if it's last year's model, get another 5% more off the msrp. On both our last two Montanas we told the dealer we want 20% off msrp and got it without argument. Just be sure to wait until after they give you a price on your trade before you mention the 20 percent.

Getting over 35% off MSRP on a just built 2010 in June of 2010 myself, it makes me wonder what is the dang mark-up on these things? I didn't even have to bargain much to get the 35% off, so I probably could have gotten it for less. When economic times are good dealers make a killing! I got the guy to throw in the second A/C, roof vent covers, large level, and a few small goodies as well.

Dont' want to start something, but, what is with those off white cabinets ? When you walk into the trailer you see both finishes, at least if they were in two seperated rooms it might not look as bad. Montana was not the only one at Tampa either. Who did they get to design these? But, to each there own. "just my 2 cents worth"
