Hanging hitch

Are there any issues with hanging the hitch off the pin for short periods (month at a time)? Will it damage the pin box or frame hanging there?

Fire5er,

I had my Reese slider hanging off my pin box (5th Airborne) most of last fall because I needed the pickup. I never tried it before and hesitated, but in reality that Reese weighs much less than I thought and I don't think I'll hesitate to do it again. It's actually very convenient.

Given a different - more heavy hitch, I may not have the same answer.

I've left mine hanging before for several months. With the beating the pin box takes going down the road, if the weight of a hitch hanging on it hurts it, the RV should not be considered road worthy.

Won't have any affect on the pin box. Just don't bump your head!

I removed our hitch assy this year still attached to the pin and left it dangling for several months until we got a portable work bench and lowered the hitch (just to relieve the stress). This question was addressed in the Pullrite paperwork. They don't say you can't leave it hanging, but they suggest removing it, probably for liability reasons.

Just a note, I did have to run a small rope from one of the slider rails to the landing gear to keep the hitch from rotating on the pin. With the Reese slider, the slider rails extend well beyond any center point of gravity so the whole hitch is tilted with the heavy end down. All is good with it pointing under the belly, but if you bump it and it rotates the hitch sticks a good 3' out the front beyond the pin box.

As Orv says, it will reach out and get you. My boy was spinning it on the pin while I was in the back. When I came around the corner I caught the rail right in the part that makes me scream and yell and crawl on my knees begging for mercy
