Need new virus protection

Well Norton finally caught up with me and cancelled my subscription with them. It came with Comcast but I no longer use them. Does any one know of a good virus software out there that is free. Rich

Interestingly, we are looking for the same thing. Our Norton just expired and I'm interested to hear what others have to say.

You might try AVG Anti-Virus, I’m using it on a lap top and it was free when I got it. I can’t guarantee it will be that way but you can Google AVG and you should be able to find it.

On edit it looks like there might be a free version available. Personally I would rather use Nortons.

I use Avast, there is a free version and a deluxe version that you pay for. Been using the free version for several years now. Was recommended by a Computer Geek who has a column is the local paper.

I have been using Nortons for years for all three of my computers I get up dates weekly and have not had any problems yet, they also have a automatic renwewal package and a countdown clock on the program so you can monitor there timekeeping on the programs life before the next renewal.
cost for three computers was 56.00 off the internet .

Had Norton's years ago, trouble, let nasties in.

Had AVG free and then even went to AVG PAY, just paid for a full year for 2 computers about March when it let in HUGE NASTIES. It was ugly!

Now using Microsoft Securities Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti Malware, both free.

So, far, so good. One thing we see happen over the years, is that what might have worked, stops working. Very frustrating.

As a senior IT Consultant, I bang on these plastic boxes for a living. I recommend the free avast at avast.com to all of our employees home computers.

ESET for us! McAfee let in many problems. Norton Security was fine but a bit pricey for four computers and also took up a lot of the computers space and slowed things down. ESET was recommended by a friend who is an IT professional. A second IT pro agreed. It is NOT free but it is better than the others. It updates regularly and we have had zero troubles. Our MIT son who is a computer geek to the max loves it also. So, that is what we have and we're sticking with it!

Google comparisons of the available anti-virus,spyware programs. It is very interesting. Hope that helps.

I am another Avast adherent. My son, degree in computer science and IT guy, put me on to it some years ago. Frequent auto upgrades keep you current. Free to non-business users.

Retired Information Security Specialist, NASA, JSC. Our anti-virus software for the entire workforce was Norton's. It has one of the better heuristics for viruses on the market. It may be a little pricey, but it has been worth my money for several years. I used to be able to take it home, now I have to pay for it and I don't mind. When renewal comes up it will be Norton's again.

Just remember that there is no one program that will do it all 100% of the time. As a new virus comes out, the companies have to check it and provide updates, this is where the heuristics come in to detect an in-the-wild virus and prevent it from doing damage by isolating it. Removal only comes when updates are provided. So if some kiddie hacker decides to push a new virus, and you just happen to open the item that propagates it, you may just happen to get it. It doesn't matter what anti-virus program you have.

The same goes for adware and spyware. Both require different programs to remove the largest percentage of adware and spyware programs. No one will remove all by themselves.

Happy trails.

All of these programs are good, but none is perfect. Remember, YOU are part of the system; if you open the door, through carelessness or inattention, none of these programs is going to save your bacon. ALWAYS keep ALL your software updated, ALWAYS use a router, and DON'T depend on an apple a day to keep your system in good health.

I have always been one of those that says "You get what you pay for!" Free does not work for me so we use Kaspersky, it updates every night with new definition files and virus databases. Every morning I log on I check to see that it was updated in the middle of the night, if not I can always run a manual update. I used Norton and McAfee before and they both let in viruses. So far (two years) so good with Kaspersky. Automatic renewal also......

In most cases, I would agree to watch out for free. However, Avast is tried and true and free unless you want to pay for the deluxe version. So "free" is not always a dog. I feel very safe in listening to computer gurus who recommend it. If you don't have someone you trust to advise you, then go ahead and pay for what you feel safe with.

Rich, when we both needed new laptops a couple of months ago I researched to see what antivirus I would want to use when the free trial ones run out. I found a number of tests and reviews that said, believe it or not, Microsft Security Essentials with the update to Windows Firewall works as well as any and better than most. And it's free. I know it's available for Windows 7 but am not sure about other operating systems. It also protects against malware/spyware but I also have some other free software for that, that SteveS recommended to me.

I thank all of you who have responded. I have just downloaded AVG Premium on a free 30 day trial basis to see how it compares to Norton which I just lost. This was also recommended to me by a friend who is a computer geek. If I like it I will pay the going price for a year, if not I will try something else.

A search on "best anti virus program" without the quotes revealed this:

Comparison

Choose your poison.

Best Internet Security Suites

If you look closely at the check list you will see that there is no one product that "does it all." So choose what you want protected and go from there.
