Sewer Smell

Why do I smell a sewer smell outside the RV every time we flush the toilet?

Are you leaving your black tank valve open? If so, keep it closed until you are ready to dump after a week or when you are ready to leave. Would also recommend using one of the chemical deodorizers in the black tank if you are not already doing so.

Could be a blocked roof vent or tank leakage contained within the Coroplast belly.

Deodorizers are a waste of money. You need to get rid of the odor, not try to mask it with a deodorizer.

Is the bathroom vent cover open? Is the black tank vent pipe on the roof near the vent cover? Lastly and hope it isn't the vent pipe may not be connected to the top of the black tank.

I have seen where the camp's sewer vent was near our site. Anytime something went down the drain, it displaced stinky air from the vent.

Is your hose screwed into the sewer outlet or just sitting in the hole? If it's not sealed some smell will come out around the hose outlet.

I have same problem with my 2018 3721RL...parked at my lake lot with full hookups. I keep all tanks closed and only empty them at the end of my weekend. I too have a sewer smell outside on my patio after every flush. My Cougar never had the problem but my new Montana does. Wouldn’t a tank leak be dripping below the Fiver? If vent is plugged how could you smell it outside?

Maybe it's time to do some investigating pull the back wall in your basement and check all the wast lines going down to the Black tank or pull down the coroplast and check to see if you have a crack or something wear the pipes go into the Black tank. We use Happy camper in are tanks and never have problem any smells or other problems!

Please update if you discover the source. I don't have this issue, thank goodness, but as rv'ers we all can benefit from your investigation and findings.
Good Luck

Mine does the same thing. I went up on the roof and the smell is coming out of the top of the vent pipe every time the toilet is flushed - with chemical in the tank. I wonder if the issue is due to flush water entering into the tank and stirring up sewage gases that come back up the vent pipe and spread into the surrounding area around the trailer? I too would like to know how to rectify the issue? It can be embarrassing at times when camped close to others.

i tend to notice the smell when the weather is real still and humid, heavy air holding the smell down rather than dispersing with wind, just my .02

If you had a leak near, at, or in the black tank or the sewer pipes, an outside smell would not be your main symptom. The smell would permeate the whole interior and the main storage area and the furnace would make matters even worse.

Just like your sticks and bricks house, you should smell sewer gases coming out of the roof vents. That's what they are designed to do. Vent the gases to the atmosphere. Depending on the wind and other weather factors, you will sometimes get a whiff of it.

Sewer smell

I purchased a “weather vane-type” cap for the top of the vent. That helped immensely. The ambient wind could be pushing tank gasses back down the vent (when you flush you get a pretty hefty odor). The weather vane helps to direct the flow of gases from the vent in the direction of the ambient wind outside. Easy installation but had to use pvc cement instead of the screws supplied.

Yes I have those also. I think they are called cyclone vent or something like that. They spin with the wind direction while drawing out the sewer gases.

I did not have any issues screwing them on however I caulked the trim rings into place.
