Antifreeze

Anyone else having a problem finding Prestone RV antifreeze? All I can find are other brand alcohol based antifreezes.

Our Wal-mart had it, but I have always used the other RV stuff!

I have always used whatever I can find and after seeing the price on the Prestone I certainly won't be using that.

Prestone is propylene glycol based. Some others I have seen are ethanol (alcohol) based. Does alcohol really dry and harden rubber seals? I have no idea. But I prefer the propylene glycol type even though it cost a little more.

When I was a kid, I worked for Union Carbide where they canned Prestone. Saw too many things, wouldn't buy it on a bet.

I always use the cheap stuff on sale and never had any problems on my 2004 or my 2010. In the spring I try to capture what I can and use the following year in my sink and shower drains.

In all of our years of boating I always did my own winterizing. Generally purchased between 20 and 30 gallons of "pink" each fall to winterize all the systems plus both engines.

We always bought the cheapest on-sale RV antifreeze we could find and it seemed like every year it was a different brand. Never noticed any problem with toilet seals or anything else.

Can't help either. We always look at the price and don't usually end up buying the same brand from year to year.

Sounds like experience trumps urban legend and the cheaper stuff is not a problem. So I guess I will go for cheaper.

We will be back home (Florida) in a couple weeks. I should check my local Walmart to see if they have any left. Should be able to buy it for about .25 a gallon after a brutal winter down there.

I use winterized windshield washer fluid in the drains, works for me and cheaper too. I blow out the water lines first. Never had a problem.

Good of a place as any to ask;

I winterized for the first time the other day. Ran the lines dry, took the caps off the water tank and low point drains. Then drained the water heater and turned the bypass on and then put the pump over to the bypass position so it would suck from the hose going into the anti-freeze. Ran two gallons through the system and it wouldn't pressurize. Went outside and found out it had peed all two gallons out thru the low point drains. So I figured out I had to put the caps back on those drains and the lines pressurized and ran the pink stuff through all the hot/cold lines including the outside shower and also made sure plenty of antifreeze in the traps as well as the toilet. Now for the question.

I ran the two gray tanks and waste tanks dry until no more water came out and some of the antifreeze I flushed through the system also came out the main drain. The question is do I leave all three drains open all winter or do I close them and put some more antifreeze into the tanks? I figured that I wouldn't put any AF in the fresh water tank and left the cap off that one.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

You will find a large quantity available. I cant believe that they sell rv anti freeze down here. But its Walmart.

Close the tank valves and add about a quart to the tanks.
