Yellowstone Visit 25-28 June suggestions

MOC Family,
I am starting to plan my northern trip. Right now my plans would have me near Yellowstone 25 - 28 June. I would be coming from Manhattan, Mt and then going on to Gillette, Wy.
I would like to see old Faithful. Do you have any recommendations for routes to or not to take and also places to camp in the area?
Thanks.

John, Depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. Many campgrounds available. We stayed in West Yellowstone at Grizzly and would go back there again. Convenient to both the north and south Yellowstone loop plus attractions in West Yellowstone

John, just a couple of comments. We have pulled our fifth-wheel from the south entrance and out through the west entrance two different times (two different trips, two different fifth-wheels). We had no difficulty at all and were able to park in the West Thumb area and the Old Faithful area with the trailer. We may have been just a bit lucky on that Old faithful parking, but we did it--and no trouble.

We stayed out at Island Park, ID in the Red Rock campground (just a few weeks ahead of Steve Reigle). It is a bit of a drive, but we enjoyed the area out in Idaho as a bonus.

Here are some photos of the Yellowstone portion of our 2005 trip in our Montana:

Note especially the youth rodeo and the scene just before it. The little rodeo was just a mile down the road from the Red Rock campground. We have lots more pictures out by the Johnny Mack cabin (I'm depending on memory for Johnny Mack's name.)

John, we live fairly close to Yellowstone NP and have made many trips to the park over the last 11 years. Our favorite place to stay has always been the Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park. However, we may try another park on our next visit. On February 17th, I had a post on the forum about Yellowstone and RV parks in the ares:

Hi John,

We too will be going to Yellowstone, per MOC recommendations we made reservations at West Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park.

Will be arriving June 29th departing July 8th, maybe our paths will cross. Would be great to meet you.

Looks like we are going in the opposite direction of you. First going to the Grand Tetons, then working our way north to Yellowstone, Glacier then on to Washington, Oregon and California.

If you think you will be in our area let us know. Have a wonderful time and safe travels.

Grizzly is a very nice park but we found we were more interested in the natural beauty of Yellowstone itself rather than the amenities of a RV park. Our choice is Fishing Bridge - a crappy park but centrally located to *ALL* the wonders of Yellowstone.

We were amazed by what we saw at Yellowstone, and we liked Grizzly RV at West Yellowstone. In the middle of June of 2012 we had snow flurries on one morning and Mosquitoes that afternoon at our Grizzly campsite. This does not happen in Tennessee.

John GO SEE the Coty museum. I have friends who live in Wyoming they both told me go see the Coty museum. So to satisfy them I went to see this little hick town museum. I was planing to spend about 15 minutes I stayed for 2 days and have been back 8 times. So much for the little hick museum, maybe I'm the hick.

Hi John: we stayed here last year. About 15 miles west of the park entrance. More reasonable and there are other things to see in this area too. There is also a boondocking area along the west and north entrances on Forest land you might check into also. If that interest you, i can find the directions....we pulled in right at about the same time as you are going, and had no problem without reservations. We just called ahead on that day.....hugs Janet

The East Gate (Cody, WY) & NE Gate (Cook City/Red Lodge/Beartooth Hwy) are going to have the most climbing and make you grateful for having a Engine/Exhaust Brake.

Fishing Bridge or West Yellowstone offer the best over all access to the Park. Old Faithful is in the SouthWest part of the park.

Keep in mind Yellowstone is huge. You will drive a lot if you want to see it all. The season is just starting to get in to full swing at the end of June as you approach 4th of July. Expect lots of people and long waits at wildlife jams. Wildlife spotting is best in the early morning and at dusk.
