Hurricane Isaac

Hurricane Isaac chased us away from Orange Beach, Al, so we just decided to head home to Crestview, Fl. I was wondering if anybody has experienced going through storms with their campers and what amount of winds will the Montanas hold up against. Thanks.

I've seen video taken by a following vehicle of a TT blown over in high wind conditions along an open stretch of highway. It took out the tow vehicle as well. As with others, my fiver is one of my pride and joys, but it just doesn't make any sense to pull into a severe storm ... you'll not only have a banged up RV, but probably no tow vehicle to boot. Look at the rest stops along the highways with the majority of the OTR trucks sitting the major storms out.

Ours set thru Francis and Jeanne. Direct hit by both... 130+mph by both. No damage. It did slide the front sideways about a foot.

We don't tow in bad weather on purpose, but have experienced some 45mph wind gusts while towing. It wasn't fun and would have been better if we weren't SRW but it was doable. I've never had any inclination to tow for the record.

How about when it is sitting at your house (we are in a storm area). At what wind speed do you get to worrying and move the camper? For example, Hurricane Isaac will produce tropical storm winds of 30-40 mphat our house. However, some gusts could get higher, I'm worried about if it could blow over on its side.

I would not be concerned about that forecast wind speeds, of course, the one burst of wind that is 110MPH is not so good, eh??

We know several that have had their rigs through some pretty snarly stuff, their houses had damage, their rigs did not. We have also had members that had a tree come down right in the middle of the rig, totaled it.

We have been through some snarly storms ourselves and a couple of times have put the slides in, and a couple of times not.

IF you can determine the wind direction they say it helps to put the nose INTO the wind.

After all that, pray for the best, and be sure the insurance is paid in full.

Don't mean to sound like a smarty pants, but, when we are talking Mother Nature, who knows?? We always hope for the best, after taking our best actions first, based on prior experiences.

I live in Navare and I'm not the least bit concerned since I'm also sitting in Durango, Co. Since Carol didn't want to be the smarty pants I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
Really, you should be just fine in Crestview.

Thanks Mike, you are right, for this one we are ok, I was also wondering for the future if anybody knew what amount of wind our rigs would hold up against.

Let's put it this way. When we had the S&B it sat next to the house when winds were supposedly clocked at near 80mph and it was still there and alright when the storm passed which is more than I can say for some of the trees. When would it tip over and how exactly would the wind have to hit it - I don't know and don't want to find out. If it does happen, that's what my insurance premiums are for.

We where in 70 mile winds at the ocean this year. Hit 1am and it was quite scary. The rv was rocking back and forth until we put the slides in and that helped alot. Hopefully do not want to repeat that again anytime soon. Stay safe everyone!

Once we had a batch of storms coming through the area that were spawning a few tornados. We were at home and not camping so I went out to the Montana and filled all of the tanks (Fresh, Gray & Black) with water to give the trailer a bit more weight. 4 tanks at approx. 50 gal. each that is almost 1 ton of extra weight to the trailer.

Storms went around us but I was ready for it. The lawn got a good watering afterwards when I emptied them all.

Isaac is bearing down on us now. The current projected path has the eye very near us tomorrow about noon. Once the internet is back up I'll give you a report on how ours made it. Certainly hope that I can give you a reassuring report.

OK Isaac is pretty much done in our area. Wind gusts were in the 60 to 70 mph range which were hitting the unit broadside. It looks pretty bad from all the leaves plastered to it but I never even saw it wiggle during the storm.

Hope you got through the storm OK. I figured Crestview would be safe, but started to wonder when I saw a tornado warning yesterday south of Dothan, Alabama, which is over 60 miles farther AWAY from the storm than Crestview!

Thanks for the info, that makes me feel a little better to know the rig can withstand wind gusts like you went through. Glad to hear you made out ok.

I Filled the fresh water and the Galley tanks for ballast, chocked the wheels and ran down the rear stabilizers as a precaution. I really didn't want to find out the hard way, would rather be safe than sorry!
As it turned out Isaac wasn't that bad here in L.A. (Lower Alabama).
