Why I really like our Montana...

I also did the scout camping quite a few times. And then did a few backpacking trips to camp farther out in the wilderness.

But one of my previous jobs years ago was as an archaeologist. So, I got to tent for 6 - 8 weeks a stretch and if we were lucky, somewhere close to a shower. There is nothing quite like working all day in the rain, and then coming "home" to find your tent blown over and full of rain where you were going to sleep for the night LOL (now, not then). We had the luxury of a cook shack, so at least we didn't have to cook, that was usually handled. I lived in the back of my dad's old Blazer for one dig, and finally got my own pickup with a canopy on it and lived in that one summer - boy was I living high - up off the ground, dry, screens on the windows, I even had a foam pad to sleep on!

But alas, that is why these old bones will probably never tent camp again - and why I REALLY appreciate the Montana!! It's not even a hotel room on wheels, it is a fully appointed house on wheels.

I didn't feel we were "Camping" in our Montana as we "Lived" in it for 4 years. Camping to me conjures up a tent, Coleman stove, complete with white gas, hand pump on the side of the tank. Another is the trusty Coleman lantern with the little white wicks you had to tie on the inside. It did not involve electricity nor air conditioning and especially a TV. Possibly a transistor radio with extra batteries, but that was the only electrical device we had. Camping was always near a lake or body of water and make sure you had your sleeping bag, no cots either, just a good air mattress that would not leak air at night, sometimes just a bedroll. Am I right?????? As Bill O'Rielly says, "I am but a simple man with simple pleasures". Back then it was pretty simple. And, by the way, don't forget the TP......

I converted from backpacking to RVing. I camped when I was backpacking. I gave all the backpacking gear to the grandchildren and became an RVer. Backpacking was great fun back then. RVing is funner, cleaner, more comfortable. I don't even boondock. It is too much like camping. Now going back to a stick house. Sort of like RVing after the wheels break off.

I am not real sure what to call what it is we do today in our Montana, but it is a lot of fun and I am too busy doing it to argue about what it should be called!

I am with Stiles (above). Except . . . that our first "graduation" was from tent camping to backpacking, and only then from backpacking to fifth-wheel. We are now in our fourth fifth wheel, every one of them a different brand--the last three purchased new. We enjoyed our Montana 2955 and traveled in it over 50,000 miles.

Makes no difference what we call what we do or have done. It has always been Going Camping to us and so it shall be.Sure do like the Montana better than the tent..

I haven't had the knees or back for backpacking for 40 years now. Football paid for college and then I've been paying for it ever since.

They don't really know the sacrifices we deal with. I have to constantly remind other "less" fortunate campers that I only have standard definition TV off the satellite and it takes at least 5 minutes to get the auto sat dish to lock in before we can watch tv...oh the humanity!
