Improved fuel milage in Dodge CTD

After a year and a half of perfect operation I noticed as the weather got colder this year it ran a little rough and blew some white smoke when starting. I took it to the dealer and they re-flashed the computer with a new "fueling profile". The mechanic said I should notice improved mileage. I waited until the second tank to confirm, so far I'm seeing an improvement from 16 to 18+ in my around town driving(and no smoke when starting). The re-flash was a no-charge from the dealer.

Mike...did the dealer translate into English? What does 'reflash'mean? Normally, white smoke, as it relates to fuel, means water or air in the fuel or an injector problem.

With my 2006 RAM 3500 DRW 4X4 and just over 1,200 miles I am getting 15+ MPG (us) and I still have a lot of breaking in to do. Very quiet engine and NO black/white smoke. I am extremely pleased with this TV/Cummins combo.

Can you get a tech bulletin number or other identifing number? Is the increase you show hand calculated or from the overhead computer? If it's an older reflash, it may be the one that changes how the overhead computer computes and reports mileage, not an actual improvement in mileage.

Ishler - I would also be interested in the tech bulletin number, interested in hand calc or overhead also - I would be interested in the reflash before I head for the RGV if it is a new one.. Can you get more INFO for us. Safe Travels John

I don't have a bulletin number, but as soon as I mentioned the white smoke and rough idle when cold the technician said "oh! you need the re-flash!) I waited for the second tank to confirm the mileage increase. It's both hand calculated and by the computer (couple of tenths difference) He also enabled the manual idle speed feature mentioned in the manual. After you start the engine, turn on the cruise control, press "set" and the idle jumps to 1000, press "accl" and the idle speed increases, press "decl" and it decreases. Touching the brake or turning the cruise off returns it to normal.

I had that flash done about 2yrs. ago. It takes away the white smoke and gives you a high idle for warm up

Hookman - I had a flash this early spring when they did that hated recall on the park (reverse) I called the dealership today and they said it was a NEW FLASH and if I wanted to bring it in Tuesday they would do it for me. Heck I have been getting 11.8 to 12.4 hand calc while towing 70 with the AC on, I have an automatice 3.73 - and 11,000 on the engine. I have been very happy with that mileage towing, but the service manager said this new flash would help a little more. We will see, I am headed for the RGV the later part of Jan, I will see then if the flash helped. I want to thank Ishler for this thread to make us Dodge folk's aware of the newer Flash. I did a little hot rodding to my 2003 3500 cummins. I got rid of the restrictions in the aircleaner, The K&N and the tube going to the turbo. I used two 5 inch pvc couplings. Next, I installed the Bully Dog Chip, and 5 inch exhaust. Then there is a mod you can do with the position sensor. I did that and now get over 20mpg not towing. Towing I get about 13 or a little better at 65mph. My Chip adds 50 or 90hp or none depending on where you set it..you can turn it off. I am pretty soft on the foot pedal, and don't make any sudden changes. Driving habits really make a difference.

Interesting!!! We have an 07 ctd that we picked up in early Nov. I just noticed today while under the hood that ours has a sticker the reads: The following modifications have been made, PCM Flash 45335853AC and is dated and the dealer # is on there that did the mod. Could these all be the same modification?

I'm saying hmmmmmm also. My truck is a 2007 Ram 2500 Diesel. There is a sticker under the hood and written on it is "UPDATE ECM". I wonder if that has anything to do with this also. Time to check with the dealer to find out what that darned sticker means once and for all...LOL
