Boss says new tires or else!
We put in a new turn-around for our new-to-us Montana.....after getting it backed into place, my wife asked about the tires....had to give her the scoop about the Marathons that I've picked up from the forum. Told her that the tire code says made in 2010, she says she doesn't care, change them out. So......I know there are a TON of threads out there on tires, but I need some up to date tire info before I start my look and purchase. Any help is much appreciated.
Also, my stamped wheels say 80 lbs max, so tell me if I should change to 110 wheels as well or I can find good 80 max tires with the wheels I now have. I love it when I get the green light from the family treasurer!

We have BF Goodrich Commercial TA's. It's the same tire I run on the TV. Firestone Transforce HT is another good tire. They are both 80# tires.
There are some others out there and someone will be along to tell you about them.

I have Bridgestone Duravis R250 tires on my rig. They will work just fine on 80lb capacity rims.
Many here run Goodyear G614 on 110 psi rated rims. If you have the extra $$$ for new rims they would be a good choice as well. Folks that have gone that route can give you more info on that.

BFG Commercial TA with around 12,000 on them, look like new, run cool. 80# pressure.
Very happy with them!

We run Michelin's on ours, handles like a dream with them. Be sure when you do get new tires whichever kind you choose that they balance them. It does make a difference no matter what anyone says.

Hi
The wheel manufacturer mounted my Goodyear G614 on their 80psi. wheels and inflated them to 110psi in August of 2009. I have 25,000 miles on them with out any problems and to this date I have not had to put air in them.

If you go to "Big Sky Package", you will see G614's on alum wheels which most of us have. Going to have them on mine tomorrow.

But my confusion is that G614's are the only tires I can find that handle the load capacity of the marathons, the Monty's 15000 gross......the other tires, like Duravis and TA's are maxed at around 3000lb carrying capacity and doesn't add up to make it to my trailer gross. But yet I've read other threads where many of you thoroughly trust the Dur. and TA's. So am I missing something here? Sorry, don't mean to be so dumbfounded on this issue...just want to make the right decision.

You need to deduct the pin weight to get the weight on the axles. I also have the BFG's and very happy with them.

When I had my '06 3400 last weighed at the Keystone factory, I had 12,600 lbs over my axles. We were fulltiming then and probably had mone inside than most, however, having said that, a 3,000 lb capacity tire was not enough for us. That is why we went with the G614's. If you travel light you might not need the heavier tires. BTW. I would NOT put 110 psi in an 80 psi rated wheel, Safety first!!!! If you want, or need, the G614, I would seriously consider a different wheel......

No you are not missing anything here I too have always wondered the same thing. My 3400 RL is 15500 GVWR there is no LT I am aware of that is rated much over 3042 in our size range. Many run a underrated tire then what the OEM were , I won't.
I run the G614's my rims are rated for 110 psi . There are not many LT tires that will fit the bill for our weight of trailer, but the G614 is one of them. IMO a tire rated for less than 3500 LBS do not belong on a 15500 GVWR trailer.

LT and ST type tires are tested and rated for two completely different applications. The ST is tested and rated at a maximum speed of 65 mph. It is designed for trailer application ONLY, and is not legal on any vehicle carrying human passengers. The LT is tested and rated at a maximum speed of 112 mph. It is designed for MULTIPLE uses, not excluding trailers, and is certified safe to carry human passengers. IMHO, if the LT only had to meet the specs of the ST, the LT would have a maximum load capacity equal to, or greater than the ST.
I'm not trying to tell anyone what they should do, I'm just saying you can't compare apples to oranges and expect identical outcomes.

Just for info the Maxxis ST235/80R/16 is rated at 3420psi @ 80lbs Load Range E, and have an excellent reputation.

I agree with you Sinterior, Maxxis has a very good reputation. It is the only ST rated tire I will stock, and at this time, the only brand I have no reservations about recommending.

I guess maybe I'm not asking a clear question. Are the aluminum wheels on our Montys good for 110 psi tires ? In the Big Sky package, the G rated picture shows what seems to be our alum. rims.

I guess I took the following quote as a statement rather than a question.

To answer your question, some are and some aren't. Look on the back side of your wheels and you should see maximum load and inflation information cast into the wheel. There may even be a sticker attached to the wheel with different information than the casting. Ozz did some pretty extensive research on the wheels fairly recently. You can probably do a quick search with the forums search feature, or maybe Ozz will be along shortly to help.

I meant 3420 lbs carrying capacity, not psi!

Thanks, Lonnie. Having one of the "bombs"in the back of TV, I looked at rim, printed 110 just as you said.
