MOR/RYDE PIN BOX

In the 2010 Montana brochure on the last page where the Mor/ryde pin box is advertised, there is a statement which reads "Our optional Mor/ryde pin box system provides a cushioning sensation despite the harshness of the road. No more clunking sounds during stop/start." We still get "clunking" sounds on starts and stops. Is there an adjustment that can be made other than properly torquing the hardware? Inquiring minds want to know

"No more clunking sounds during stop/start." That is marketing BS. Note how far the travel back and forth travel is on the system. Overcome that travel and you will clunk.Look at the white spacers and see how far they travel. Couple of inches back and forth. We clunk at times stop sort of quick....clunk...start sort of quick....clunk.

The only adjustment I know of, is to replace the spring which is actually the large rubber block. I replaced the #4 spring with a #5 when I removed the Mor/Ryde that was on our 3075 and installed it on our 3465. The larger the number, the stiffer the spring. Unfortunately, the only way to see the number is to disassemble the Mor/Ryde.

Mine clunked with the #5 and now clunks with the #4. The Mor/Ryde made a improvement but like Rich stated in fast starts or stops it still clunks.

Yep, kind of like the "arctic insulation" package.

Jack I noticed a clunk sometimes but I think mine might be coming from the base of the hitch with the four pins. There is a slight rocking of the cradle that holds the hitch. This sometimes will clunk under the right conditions.
I am not suggesting this is what is happening with yours just something I think is happening with mine. I had the same thing when I did not have the MorRyde pin box.

Not only did we not get the "warm and toasty package" We also did not get the "no clunking " package. What will be next?????

Oh well, it never hurts to ask I'll check the torque on the bolts for the white nylon spacers and maybe give Mor/ryde a call on Monday. If I find out anything, other than what all of you have said, I will let you know. Thanks for all of the replies!

I agree with Jolu,I have the airborne and I still get a clunk when I take off and stop.I considered putting oversize pins to see if the clunking would stop.

Sounds like its not a worth while investment. I just go easy on the stops and starts makes it easier on the brakes too.

I'm sure my Mor/Ryde dampens a good deal of the clunk but I still get a slight bit of clunking. I'm sure some of it comes from the hitch in the bed. As stated, it will move a bit on the rails. As Dennis said, if it clunks , I know it's still there. I also keep in mind that I'm pulling almost 7 tons of TRAILER and don't expect it to feel like it's welded to the truck.

There is way more to it than that. Chuck, bounce,

Jackel 1959. This is real hard to explain.....Look at the round white spacers. If the flat surface they set on is dirty you should be able to see the area of back and forth movement by the clean area. The travel to the front should not be up against the upward slope of the hitch. If it is you need a heavier pad. The MAX movement is about 2 inches back and forward..
Mor Ryde looked at mine at the fall rally. aand installed a heavier pad..

We have the Mor-Ryde pin box and have no clunking on the highway, when starting or stopping. I've tried this and checked for noises and/or movement. We do have a B & W hitch so maybe the pair compensate for elimination of any clunking. Our pinbox only moves about an inch max. If it is moving much more I'd check components, ie lose hardware, wrong bushings/cushions, one wouldn't want this to come apart at anytime when hitched to the TV.

Even with the chucks you know it's gotta dampen some of that herky-jerky going down the washboard highways we have here in Virginia. Recently came back from a couple thousand mile circuit, Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana ,Alabama, Oklahoma. (not in that order of course). Worse road I ran on were here in Virginia. Thanks guys.

I checked the movement yesterday and it is about an inch forward and back. The bolts are all torqued to the proper specs as well. I guess its just the nature of the beast. Once we are moving, everything is fine its just starting and stopping. i will see if Mor/ryde will send me a heavier rubber block and see about changing it out at the Lake Siskiyou rally.

Morryde told me that you should have 1-1 1/2 inches travel fore and aft, if you are only getting an inch you probably don't want to stiffen things if anything you may want softer, talk to Morryde and see what they suggest.

Good heads up Charlie on the travel tolerance at about 1 1/2 inches. Mor/Ryde gave me the same info and clunking is really to a bare minimum. As Jim says we are towing around 7 tons. That's a bit more than a lawnmower!!

Jack, you'll just have to get one of those crew cab dually long box jobs to pull and eliminate that chucking! LOL.
