Just noted that my new Montana has Dexter axles/wheels. My old unit had Alco Kober.
What is the difference?

I have Dexter axles and I am happy with them. Dexter is the same brand I have had on my previous Fifth wheels and my utility trailer has Dexter axles as well. They are a popular brand and I know I have overloaded my utility trailer a lot and never had a problem with the Dexters.
Alco Kober, I have never owned so I know nothing about them.

Wrenchtraveller is right on. Dexter has been around since Moby Dick was a minnow. They make axles from 1000lb. up to 16000lb that I know of. All of our tandem axle dual wheel equipment trailers have 12000lb Dexters under them, and we have never bent one, or had one brake. I don't know anything about the Al-Ko axles, but I honestly don't think you can go wrong with Dexter.

All I know is I`ll never buy a RV with Alko axles on them again. I had problems with the alignment in the first year. Went through a set of tires and the alignment was so far off the Tech who fixed the axles said these axles should have never left the factory. Alko did nothing to help with the junk axles that were assembled on my RV. The Dealer called them several times sent pictures of the tires and axles and the printout that shows how far out of wack the axles were. They finally decided that they will send me 2 new axles, what am I going to do with them, I wanted re-embursement but they said no way. I`ll tell everyone don`t buy an RV with Alko axles and don`t buy one without an alignment and wheel balancing as part of your deal before purchasing an RV.

From reading the RV net I think Alco had couple of bad years 2003-05. My Alkos were installed 11/99 and never had a problem with them.

I have owned 3 Travel Trailers and now this Montana and have never had problems with the axles or alignment to the point of ever looking to see what brand of axle is under the unit. Now I have to crawl under and find out, THANKS!

Doug,
Darrell told me if the axles have metal tags on the axle tubes, they are Al-Ko. If not, they are Dexters.
Illapah - The Dexters should be an improvement over your Al-Kobers. You probably have 8-lug hubs and better bushings/shackles.

There have been several of us that have had brake problems with Dexter. The electronic braake wiring would rub on the inside and wear off the insulation and the brakes would ground out. Rathere scarry when you're pulling that kind of weight doing 60 MPH. A ways check your wires when you repack the bearings.

Could be but a better bet is Keystone listened to our complaints about all the problems with Alko-Kober axles reported in this forum and to their service center. We had one Alko axle replaced and paid $150 for realignment of both axles plus we had to replace a full set of tires. The current Montana has Dexters.
