No sewer at hookup site?

Since we're new to the RV deal and have very limited experience we've only stayed at parks that have full hookups (that include sewer). I've seen a few parks on the internet lately that don't have sewer but have dump stations. Without sewers don't you have to move the RV to the dump station each day to dump; what am I missing?

Is there another way that you deal with no sewer availability at the hookup site? Thanks!

You can use what is called a blue boy portable tank for dumping the gray water, but the Black dont have to be dumped that often, and that one I would drag the Monty over for that.

You can usually go a couple of days before you need to dump depending on your water usage. Thetford makes totes that you can dump into and take to the dump station.

Those parks w/o sewer generally have restrooms that often become utilized more than you would normally with a sewer hookup. Managing the black tank becomes a personal effort on your part and what is convenient to extending the number of days before you have to dump. We tend to use the showers and restrooms more in such parks and our personal toilet during the night when necessary.

Gary and Lisa-- You have a very good question here! Some parks have the "full hookup" sites and others have limited. Those that have the full hookup, as you've experienced, have the sewer, water and electric and sometimes even phone and cable hookups. The rv parks that have "limited" are those that normally don't have the sewer hookups. Those usually have a dump station somewhere on premises (normally it is near the exit or on the way out of the park). If you are at a park that is limited the use of water is critical. You should be able to go for 3-4 days and some have gone as far as a week or more without having to dump the tanks. You learn to conserve water but one place not to do it is in the "throne room". If you don't use enough water there you can get into some real problems such as the "pyramid effect" and when it comes to dumping your tanks you don't get your tank empty. Always use plenty of water here and septic tank use toilet paper. If you are staying at a limited park for any amount of time you will have to unhook shorepower and water, hook up the TV, head for the dump station, dump and rinse your tanks then head back to your site and hookup all utilities again and continue life as usual. Some parks also have a "honey wagon" come by and for a fee will pump out your tanks. This way you don't have to unhook your unit and take it to the dump stations. The big deal is to learn to use water sparingly (except for "the room").

Since you are new to the fifth wheeling experience why not consider coming up to Nebraska for the MOC Central Plains Regional Rally to be held July 14th-19th. You will meet members from the MOC community and will learn a lot by just talking to those in attendance. Besides all of the commeradary there's always the fun and food you experience at a Rally. You can check out the Central Plains Rally by going to the MOC Regional Camping Clubs section on the website here, then find North American MOC/ Central Plains Region and then click on the Rally announcement under "It's Time for a Rally" thread. There are other threads concerning the Rally to check out also and we hope you can join us. I think you two would really enjoy the Rally and you can learn a lot from just being there. Oh, by the way, the RV park we're in IS a full hookup park except it does not have cable.

Think about joining us and if you have any questions just drop me an email or PM(private message). You can email or PM us by going to our profile page (just click on our MOC name and you'll see email and PM) or just send me a message back here and I'll email you.

We stay in a lot of the 1000 Trails parks without sewers. With a little practice and planning we can go a week at a time without having to dump. We do use the CG restrooms and showers while there and DW does dishes in a dispan and drops water in toilet, cleans it at the same time. If you need to extend your galley or gray tank you can buy a cutoff valve that goes on the end of your sewer pipe, then close it and open both gray and galley valves together. The water will equalize between the two tanks and give you greater capacity. 1000 Trails offers a "Honey Wagon" service and comes by several times a week.

Don't feel you NEED to dump everyday, as you don't!!!!

We can go around 10 days without dumping. That is with two grandkids along. We have taught them how to use little water. We use the camp restrooms during the day.

Ditto the use of campground rest rooms! We try to use them instead of the on board throne, except in the middle of the night or during thunderstorms. You get more exercise and fresh air, you save tank space on board, you generally have more room for showers and shaving, and you get to rub elbows with your fellow campers. Perhaps you have no desire to meet the "little people" that only have a pop up to live in. Many a conversation about weather, things to do, conditions at the park, etc, get started over the sinks and in front of the mirrors. And it opens up a whole new world to you. Most state and national parks do not have sewer hook ups, and they are some of the best places to stay.

With just the wife and I, we can get by for about a week without dumping the tanks.
