It's Medicare time again!
It's that time again to choose a Medicare supplement for next year. We have quotes from both Cigna and Mutual of Omaha so far and both seem to be reasonable. The sales reps make it all sound so good, but we want to hear if there is anything that we should know about these or other plans that the reps won't tell you. FYI, our domicile is South Dakota and neither plans include drug coverage. We will deal with that separately.

Not familiar with either. But I would recommend you call your preferred medical providers, including your hospital, to make sure they accept those plans.

Also, if you belong to AARP take a look at theirs also.

You don't have to belong to AARP to use their insurance. We have it and is no cost, but IS an HMO. If you were full time, I don't think an HMO would work well. They also have something for about $200 apiece, I think that allows all docs, etc.

Haven't heard anything on either on but I have a sister-in-law that works in the insurance department of one of the local hospitals and I will ask her if she has had any problems with either one. I'll let you know here and also in a PM. I'm out at the farm presently but will be back in Omaha tomorrow or Saturday at the latest and I'll ask her then.

make sure that they will cover you out of your 'living' area.
as for aarp, it actually united healthcare. check with both i suspect that they are different rates.

We just went on Medicare since last July and we have had Mutual of Omaha with minimal, but good service. The AARP was more expensive. We had United Healthcare through my work before retiring and had good luck with it for many years.

Your medicare supplement plans are designated by letters---A_B_C_D and so-on pick the plan you want and then go find the less expensive of the plan you pick. If you pick, for instance, plan F, all plan F's are the same with all companies. They will work with any doctor and/or hospital that accepts Medicare. In Texas I use a group called Go- Medigap, they do the searching at no additional cost to me, how ever I'm sure the ins. co's pay them and is built into my premium. Last years premium was $175.00/mo. This year is $133.00/mo. Changed insurance companies to get the reduced premium.

We have Blue Cross/Blue Shield (Arkansas). Look at plan G same coverage as F but less expensive. We had to pay $147.00 deductible first but the difference in monthly fees made it a better buy.

Don and Bonnie--Sorry it took me a day or two to get back to you but I've been out at the farm. Talked to my sister-in-law and she said she would recommend Blue Cross and Blue Shield out of SD. As old dude stated all plans have to have the same thing in them BUT some may offer some extras that you might find to your advantage. As Hogfan stated the plans may be the same but check them out for better pricing. My SIL also said to stay away from the Humana plans because very few medical facilities will accept the Humana plan. IF you are wanting drug coverage and you are on quite a few prescriptions check into the upper letters of coverage. The drug section is a totally different deal and check out your insurances close for that coverage. My SIL said if she was trying to decide on what supplement to pick it would be: 1. Blue Cross/Blue Shield 2. Cigna 3. Mutual of Omaha. Hope this helps! If you have future questions PM me and I'll give you my phone number so you can talk to my SIL personally.
