RV Parks in or near Gettysburg, Pa.
Planning on going to Gettysburg area end of May for a week. Looking for recommendations on campgrounds/tourist things to do in the area. Wish we could do the NorthEast rally in Pa. but have a graduation to attend in New Jersey that weekend.
Thanks,
Marge

I have been to Gettysburg many times with school groups. Find a trained and licensed guide or a tour with one. They are very knowledgeable and you will learn lots of interesting things.
I too would like a recommendation for a nearby campground.

Jim & Marge,
There are 7 campgrounds in a 10 mile radius of Gettysburg.
Artillery Ridge is a PassPort American member and has horse tours of the battle field.
Gettysburg Campground hosted the North East Rally in 2008
Others are:
Drummer Boy- We use to camp here until their price went up
Round Top
KOA-Gettysburg
Granite Hill
As far as things to do. The battle field tour can take a few days depending on the detail you want to get into.
Adams county Vineyard is good.
Large Amish flea market in Thomasville, PA on route 30 east towards York about 22 miles from Gettysburg.
Beckley RV in Thermont, Md supported our 08 Rally and has given me good service.
I hope this helps.

If you are Coast to Coast member then Gettysburg RV Resort. Also there are CD and map sets
Available that let you tour in your vehicle at your own speed. We took 2days.we also visited the Sound and lite theatre in Lancaster, excellent.

We stayed at the Gettysburg KOA, and thought it was a nice park.

We stayed at Artillery Ridge aqnd it was an okay park. Not a destination type park for us, but nice for a place to see while touring. We also did the Segway tour of Gettysburg and loved it. The guided tour was about 2-1/2 hours and the Segway was surprising easy to ride. Would do it again it a heartbeat.

Artillery Ridge is Passport America and Good Sam, a nice CG but not great.
Gettysburg CG is also nice, but no discounts, pull thru's are the best.
Round Top is OK also.
Gettysburg Battlefield RV, no sewer for C2C members.
And agree, go into the hotel in town and get a Historian to take you at least thru town, great stories.

We stayed at Drummer Boy. It has been a few years now, but it was nice. Nothing spectacular.

Jim and Marge,
We always stay at Artillery Ridge. It is the closest to the visitor center. It is Passport and Good Sam and the will "mix and match" on the dates to maximize the discounts. They will also give you free tickets to the Diorama which is somewhat like the old electric Map. Ask the office for directions.
I would recommend you go first to the diorama for the overview; then back to the visitor center to see the museum. (skip the movie and the cyclorama for now)
Then hire a battlefield guide and do the tour. It is about 2-2 1/2 hours. Now you know enough to go back to those things you want to see more of. The self guided tape tour is good. Before you leave be sure and go back to see the cyclorama and the movies. IMHO you will appreciate it more having done all of the previous.
Gettysburg campground is very nice and probably better as a campground than Artillery Ridge, Round Top is OK, Drummer Boy is way overrated IMHO
We go often and we have stayed at all of the above. We finally decided that Artillery Ridge works best for us. We go to the diorama every time we are in town.

Thanks so much for the recommendations on RV parks and information about the area.
Comparing prices between Artillery Ridge and Gettysburg campground. With the discounts that we get with Passport America and Good Sams, Artillery Ridge is about a $100.00 less for a week. Looks like we will be going to Artillery Ridge.
Thanks,
Marge & Jim

If the campgrounds aren't too far away maybe we can meet up. When do you plan on being there?

Sorry, we won't be there then, we will be back in Maine. I'm sure you will have a great trip. Hopefully our paths will cross another time.

We stayed at Artillery Ridge last fall--great location and a very easy park to get around. Yes, get a guide at the Park Hdq. and take the tour that includes the Eisenhower Farm--lots of history. Enjoy the time in Gettysburg--we did after we saw Maine!

We go often and always to Artillery Ridge. Easy to get downtown and to visitors center. Closest to the battlefield if you are biking. No cement pads but spacious easy to pull into sites. We usually only come back at night anyway. The third person in my avatar sits in front of the visitors center. Say hi to him for me.

We stayed at Artillery Ridge last year and had a very enjoyable stay. We liked the CD tour because it allowed us to set the pace. Was very hot when we were there and this allowed us to take a break anytime we wanted.

Jim and Marge,
We have stayed in and around the Gettysburg area several times and always found that Cordorus State Park was one of the nicest places to stay. Albeit 30 mins from the heart of Gettysburg, staying in a PA state park is the best and at an average of $27/ night you can't beat the price for full hook-ups.
If it works here is a link to the park
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/statepar...apark/codorus/
Good Luck!
