Completly used up a anode rod while in Az for the winter. When we flushewd out the tank it looked like snow in the driveway. You can get a thingy at C.W that helps in the flush process. Checked it the other day and the rod is hardly pitted but we do flush the system on a regular basis... It don't hurt.
