That's the reason that the day I got the truck I have now, I took the OEM tailgate off and bought a cheap "V" tailgate. Good luck in getting your replacement.

Tailgate doesn't have to be from a 3500. Any GM tailgate from mid 2007 (newer body style) and up will fit. Nor does it have to be a Chevy, as a GM is the same. A little heat with a hair dryer will soften up the "Sierra" letters for removal. You may luck out at a wrecking yard and get one the same color. Or try ebay. If you can't get the same color, take it to your local auto body shop and ask what they would charge to paint it when they either aren't busy or when they are shooting the same color. You may wait a while, but I got a fiberglass cap painted for $100 by doing this.

Louvered tailgate? I read somewhere that they give you better mileage.

According to what I've read (somewhere?) louvered tailgates improve the mileage so much that you have to begin siphoning fuel out of the tank to keep it from running over. Could this be true?

I put the louvered gate on my TV and my fuel mileage increased almost 25%. Not only that put without the OEM gate blocking all that wind I find I can coast a mile or two further down the road. Only down fall is without the OEM gate creating all that resistance I find braking distance has increased considerably. What to do, what to do?

Check out truck body up fitters in your area. In many cases new trucks come in to have utility bodies added and the existing bed is left for sale. Also sometimes a slide in body negates the need for a tailgate. If you get lucky, you may even find one the same color. My father-in-law banged his bed up pretty bad a few years ago, and I left word at three such up fitters in the area. Within 5 weeks, we were able to get a brand new replacement bed and tailgate that matched for a great price. They also had a number of tailgates available. We are in Vermont, but I would expect you have plenty of these type of up fitters in your area as well.
Good luck, most of us have been there at one time or another. Tim

Oh! By the way. Not my fault (yeah right) but when my King Ranch tailgate needed to be replaced (because of someone else - and it's posted on this forum) I decided to put an insurance claim in. Well, it seems if you are moving, even just a little, in a vehicle and something happens to have you make a claim, it is considered a moving violation, even if you don't get ticketed (Progressive) It was a "strike" two and my insurance rate increased considerably.
Sorry I started the Louvered Tailgate thingy again, but I know it is bringig a lot of fond chuckle memories.

mcgiver2 sorry about your tailgate, but many have done the same thing. I do have a Huskey Aluminum V-Notch tailgate that I no longer use. I used it for abut9 months it was used on our 2008 Chevy Dually. Its stored in the box it was shipped in, its lockable and has two keys. Don't remember for sure what I paid for it but I think it was about $475.00 but I will take $275.00 if your interested let me know. Good Luck. GBY....
P.S. If you go to our web site I think you can see it on the Truck.
