Parking on asphalt

I just had my RV parking area replaced and expanded. Over 20 years of parking trailers on the asphalt it needed replaced. They put down 6" of AB and 4" of asphalt. Geotex fabric was placed on the dirt and Geogrid was placed in the center of the AB. It's not going anywhere. It's still not a guarantee that the landing legs wont sink into the blacktop. The company told me to use plywood to distribute the weight. I was thinking about 3/4" birch and paint it black. Thoughts?

A 2x6 or 8 will work but whatever you want will be fine.

I took pressure treated 4X4 and cut into 18” lengths. I then screw two sections together, it gives me a pressure treated 4x8x18. I have 8 in total that I use under all my landing gear. I’ve had them 10+ years and they are holding up fine. I would be concerned with plywood that it would separate with time. YMMV

At home, my tires are on 12 inch wide, 8 feet long treated lumber. The jacks themselves are on 6x6 inch (about 16 inches long) blocks, and my asphalt still sinks. I've filled the low spots with asphalt patch, and it keeps packing down over time, leaving an indent where the board sit. And my asphalt was completely redone a few years go too.

The bigger the foot print for the weight, the better off you will be. But, in time, no matter what, you can expect the asphalt to sink under the weight of the tires and jacks.

I would use treated 2x8 or wider rather than plywood. But definitely use something on the asphalt.

I don’t think plywood is a good choice. There is too much give in it. It doesn’t support weight very well. Put a 2X2 piece down and lay a 2x4 under each end put a thousand pounds on it and see what happens. Something much more rigid would be a better choice. It sounds like you have a good base under it and that is the key. With loose soil under it there would be nothing that would prevent it from sagging but with a good base you need little. A couple or 3 2x6s or 8s or larger running from one side to the other should be enough.

Thanks for the input. I just returned from a trip out where I discovered these.

I got the 18"

I also use 2 6x6 pressure treated placed together under each leg. Every time I have tried 2x6 or 2x8 pressure treated they split in half.
