I believe the anode is there to protect the water heater from electrolysis. The deposits in the tank are the result of minerals in the water. Electrolysis will destroy metal. I've seen it eat pinholes in steel lines to where they looked like a sprinkler system.

BTW, I've got one of those rinky dink tank cleaners. You will be better off building one using 1/4" copper tubing.
