"better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6". Corny, maybe, but that pretty well sums it up for me. I like a revolver, myself, for the simple fact that you can load it and forget it. Just pick it up and pull the trigger.
Shotguns are cheap and plentiful, and you can get ammo anywhere with no hassle (except maybe the People's Republic of Taxichusetts).
Not real packable, but sometimes you don't need to pack anything on your person.
