When it filled up the flow would stop but closing the valve still left the little hose full of black "stuff" that had to go somewhere and the tank was already full. This was quite a few years ago and many people use them successfully so maybe they've improved them.

So true, I sent that company a sugestion years ago about installing a clear plastic on the tank, like the oil cantainers have, to see how much oil you have, that way a person can see where the gray water level is at, allowing time to close the gate valve.
