Your not alone on this one, we have a 7500 W generator and do the same thing, 220 outlet in the garage connected to sub panel. ALWAYS turn off the main breaker first. Using a male to male extension cord, connect the gen to the 220 outlet, then turn on the gen's breaker which powers the hole house. Generator sits outside of the garage, its on wheels.
