A ladder can be handy for many unforeseen maintenance calls. Stuck antenna, vent not closing, check the roof after traveling back roads with low branches, etc, etc. I never carry one because like you have noticed how many people do. I have never had a problem borrowing one when needed and stick with that plan..
So, if you like to borrow stuff, forget it.. if you like to loan stuff out, you better get one!!!
