Awning Unfurling

We searched for this topic, but didn't find anything recent. We drove on the 'Enchanted Highway' in North Dakota in August to look at the sculptures. There was a high crosswind, into the curb side of the trailer, that day. Looking at the weather info the wind was 36 mph with gusts to 45 mph. A person drove up next to us blowing his horn and said our awning was out. The awning arms were extended and the awning was flapping in the breeze. We pulled over, went into our HC and retracted the awning. We decided that was enough enchantment so we turned around and had no other issues the rest of our trip. And yes, the awning was retracted before we left the campground that morning.
So the question is, has anyone else had this problem, and what can be done to prevent it? Our awning is still usable, but there is a 4 - 5 inch tear along one end of it where it is attached to the trailer, so there may be a replacement required at some point in the future.
