I would put the fuse back in, unless you waited for several minutes after turning off thermostat. I would pull the outside cover off the furnace to see if there is any visable signs of water intrusion on the circuit board if the furnace started to run as soon as the fuse was re-installed. Has all the earmarks of a control board failure. You could unplug the thermostat to make sure it hasn't bit the dust...but I would find that harder to believe as it only tells the electronics to start a firing sequence.
