There is 9" between steps on our 3485 but Lorraine nor I have had a problem. Being a side aisle model it does not have the inside step which we had in the 2955. I always hated that inside step.
Anyway, I am 6' tall but Lorraine is only 5' and she sees no problem at all with the 9" step.
No neither one of us have ever fallen or tripped on these steps.
