We have always used the fireplace heater, even when it is freezing. When the outdoor temps are 50 and above it works fine by all by itself. I also set the furnace thermostat at about 64 overnight, which causes the furnace to run about 3-4 times overnight when temps are in the 40's. If it was below freezing, which it will be tonight here in Alabama, I expect the furnace to run a lot. Electricity is free in almost every RV park, so why not use it? We agree with many who also commented that for safety reasons we don't leave the fireplace running when we leave.
