I've done fiberglass repair. So long as the damage does not go all the way through and not cracked, you should be ok. What you don't want is for water to seep through the damaged area. If it's cracked, I would use Gorilla tape to to ensure water won't get in. May be ugly, but internal water damage ensures that the end cap will need to be removed.
