Route 17 in Colorado

We're looking at a trip to CO and AZ in the near future. One of the attractions we would like to see is the Cumbres & Toltec Narrow Gauge Railroad based in Chama, NM. We have heard that getting there from the east is a difficult drive (with a 34' fiver) over a very mountainous two lane road, Route 17, in CO coming from Alamosa, CO. If we travel north from Santa Fe we would use US 84. Can anyone advise, are these roads that difficult with a fifth wheel trailer? I do NOT have an exhaust brake and do not plan to invest in one just for one trip.

Thanks for any advice,

Kevin
