Switching the negative terminal is more of a safety thing as removing either battery terminal will isolate it from parasitic drain. If you remove the negative cable and something falls onto the positive terminal ... nothing will happen. If you remove the positive cable and something falls onto that terminal ... it will either power up that circuit or create a direct short as in a wrench between terminal and frame.
